GOWANDA — Betty J. Smith, 89, of Gowanda passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, at Mercy Hospi-tal. She was born on Oc.7, 1932, in East Aurora, daughter of the late A. Walter and Viola (Krohn) McCubbin. She was married to Claude Smith Jr. who predeceased her on July 22, 2000.
For over 30 years, Betty worked at Gowanda Psychiatric Center and was the head of housekeeping. She was a member of the Gowanda American Legion Auxiliary, Gowanda Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, enjoyed roller skating and was an avid bowler.
Betty is survived by a daughter. Claudia Logsdon of Gowanda; and a daughter-in-law, Debra Smith of Hamburg. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Ron Dicus, Nichole (Tom Henderson) Dicus, Michael (Brianna) Logsdon, Erik (Lauren) Smith and Lindsay (David) Szewczyk; as well as seven great grandchildren: Roxanne Dicus, Ainsley Logsdon, Molly Logsdon, Coy Henderson, Caroline Smith, Grey Szewczyk, and Bodhi Szewczyk, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Smith is predeceased by a son, Randy Smith; two brothers: Larry McCubbin and Walter McCubbin; and an aunt, Millie Dietz.
Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. at Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main St. in Gowanda. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022, at 11 a.m. from the funeral home.
Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital or St. Jude’s Hospital.
