Joyce Lines Cain

Joyce Lines Cain, age 90, of Holden Mass., formally of Fredonia, N.Y., died Friday, June 3, at the Dodge Park Senior Home in Worcester, Mass.

Joy was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Arthur D. and Mildred Yager Lines.

She spent her childhood years in Alden, N.Y., and attended both the Alden and Livonia High Schools, the former near her parents’ summer home on Conesus Lake, and graduated from Lavonia in 1946 at age 15. Joy attended Hood College in Maryland, where she received a bachelors degree in psychology. She continued her education at Syracuse University where she received a master degree in psychology. After graduation Joy took a position as the Dean of Women at Bucknell University where she met her future husband, Stuart F Cain. Joy and Stuart eventually relocated to Fredonia, N.Y., where she took a position in the Fredonia Central School District until the birth of their son, Stuart, in 1967.

Joy was an active member of the Katherine Pratt Horton Chapter (Buffalo) of the Daughters of the American Revolution and held several state offices including State Chair of DAR Schools (1998-2001), State Chair of DAR Scholarships (2001-2204), State Chair of Speakers Staff (2007-2013), and Vice Chair of Credentials (2004-2007). She also held two national positions including Nations Vice Chair of DAR Schools (1998-2001) and New England Vice Chair of DAR Scholarships (2001-2004).

Joy was an active member of the community and the Fredonia First United Methodist Church serving as chairman of the Congregational Care Committee for many years as well as serving on the Missions Committee and working with the youth groups. She was also a member of the Fredonia Preservation Society and worked to renovate and restore the Gate House at the Forest Hill Cemetery in town.

Joy is survived her son, Stuart A. Cain (Kristine Yont Cain) of Holden, Mass.; three grandchildren: Douglas, Michael and Elizabeth Cain; and her niece, Kathy (Boulton) Barlup, of Camp Hill, Pa.

Visitation will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022, from 10-11 a.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
