Harold J. Zell

Harold J. Zell age 91 of Hendersonville, NC, formally of Fredonia, NY passed away peacefully at home with his family on December 7, 2022.

Harold was born March 20, 1931, in Lackawanna, NY, the son of the late Clarence Zell and Irene Pecor. He was raised in Blasdell, NY by Emma and Arthur Ross and graduated from Blasdell High School.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Stonham Zell who he married in 1952; son, Daniel J. (Terry) Zell; daughter, Susan (Robert) Greco; grandchildren, Nicholas (Chanda) Greco, Robyn (Brion) Dixon, Daniel R. (Katie) Zell, Jeffery (Kristine) Zell and Julie (Jordan) Hahn along with eleven great-grandchildren, Camille Greco, Chase Greco, Ethan Dixon, Chloe Dixon, Piper Zell, Hattie Zell, Cleo Zell, Mason Zell, Lila Zell, June Hahn, and Jay Hahn.

Mr. Zell began his career with Liberty Bank of Buffalo in 1949, and Bank of Blasdell in 1950. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1951-55 and was stationed in New York City and served overseas at Port Lyautey, French Morocco. He returned to Blasdell Bank which merged with M&T Bank. He completed his financial education by graduating from the American Institute of Banking at Millard Filmore College in Buffalo. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (JC’s) of Hamburg, member of the Scranton Vol. Fire Company, Blasdell-Woodlawn Lion’s Club, President of the Homeowners Association in Scranton. President of the Hamburg Chapter of the National Campers-Hikers Association Hamburg. In 1964 he was transferred to the M&T Bank in Fredonia where he was active in many civil organizations, President of Fredonia Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the Fredonia Kiwanis, President of the Fredonia and Silver Creek Kiwanis Clubs. He is a Life Member of Fredonia American Legion Post. After 43 years in banking, he retired as Assistant Vice President, Manager of the Silver Creek office of M&T Bank.

Harold was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fredonia where he served as President, Treasurer, and council member for 31 years.

Throughout the years Harold had many hobbies including family camping, golfing, reading, motorcycling, and traveling with his wife. Marge and Harold were members of the Couples Club in Dunkirk and Fredonia where they gathered monthly for fun events and fellowship. Harold was a member of Jamestown, NY Chapter U GWRRA and Chapter M2 of Hendersonville, NC (Gold Wing Road Riders Association) Harold was particularly proud of his children and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In June of 2013 Harold and Marge moved to Hendersonville, NC sharing a home with their daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Bob Greco. They joined the Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Hendersonville.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, 2606 Chimney Rock Road, Hendersonville, NC, on Monday, December 19th at 11:00 AM. A second memorial service and burial will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredonia, NY at a later date.
