FREDONIA – Barbara Sam, a beacon of kindness and entrepreneurial spirit, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 69, on August 9, 2023.

Born on June 22, 1954, in Dunkirk, NY to Susan and Esau Sam, Barbara blossomed into an emblem of resilience and determination. She was an alumnus of Fredonia High School class of 73′ and furthered her education by attaining an associate degree from George Washington University, followed by a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Le Moyne College and continued her graduate studies for public administration at American University.

Barbara etched her entrepreneurial mark in Dunkirk and Fredonia NY. She managed successful ventures like “Time Pieces,” “Aunt Alice Vintage,” and “Barbara Grace LLC.” Her businesses weren’t just enterprises; they were statements of her indomitable spirit and love for the community.

Barbara was not only a seasoned entrepreneur but also a fierce advocate for women in business. She was a living testament that women can lead, inspire, and uplift entire communities. A philanthropist at heart, Barbara’s compassion knew no bounds. She dedicated countless hours to causes close to her heart, volunteering at organizations like The Literacy Volunteers of Dunkirk, The Lakeshore Humane Society, and The Fredonia Festivals.

She was a model of generosity, continually reminding everyone of the transformative power of community engagement and the ripple effect of one good deed. Her unwavering dedication to the betterment of her community set her apart, making her a cherished figure among many.

In the wake of her departure, Barbara leaves behind her loving sister and confidant, Grace Sam; her father, Esau Sam of Dunkirk, NY; brothers Charles Sam of Dunkirk NY and Robert Sam of Palmetto FL; and nephews Alex Sam of Westfield, NY, and Jacob Sam of Dunkirk, NY.

She now reunites with her late mother, Susan Sam, and adored Aunt Alice, who undoubtedly greeted her with open arms.

In remembrance of Barbara’s vast heart and enduring legacy, the family kindly requests donations in her name to one of her favored charities, the Lake Shore Humane Society of Dunkirk NY (716-672-1991). Each contribution, regardless of its size, will be a testament to her lifelong dedication to compassion and service.

A private Celebration of Life service will be held for family and close friends.
