Dr. Charles Salvatore Mancuso
Dr. Charles Salvatore Mancuso, 93, of Bedford, NH, died July 31, 2024, after a brief illness.
Born in Fredonia, NY, he was the son of Orazio George, and Jennie (Tampio) Mancuso.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Fredonia State in 1953. He went to US Army Signal School, in Ft. Monmouth, NJ in 1953-54, followed by service in Korea in the UN Command, Military Armistice Commission in 1954-55
After the Army, he worked in the Kenmore- Tonawanda NY school system as an elementary teacher. He continued his education at Canisius College of Buffalo and earned a master’s degree in 1961. While serving as the West Irondequoit Elementary School principal, he earned his doctorate from the University of Buffalo in 1969. He then moved to Pennsylvania in 1973, where he served as the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration for the East Stroudsburg Area School district. He retired from that position in 1993.
He was an active member of the Monroe County PA Rotary club and served as president in 1987-88. He also was active in the Monroe County United Way, serving as Campaign Chairman, and also as President.
He was the husband of the late Nan (Armstrong) Mancuso of Salamanca, NY, who predeceased him in 2012 after 54 years of marriage. He took care of her for many years during her battle with Alzheimer’s. His family included his son, Patrick and wife, Marjorie, of Wolfeboro NH; as well as two grandchildren, Dr. Christopher Mancuso and wife, Hannah (Turner), of Cambridge, MA and Dr. Cecilia Mancuso of Jamaica Plain, MA. He is survived by three sisters, Gina Palermo of Fredonia, NY, Lucille Mancuso of Fredonia, NY, and Marie Sweeney of Seattle, WA.
He was a communicant of Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, in Bedford NH.
He was an avid enthusiast of classic cars and drove his Corvette every chance he got. He was a jazz musician and played string bass in several quartets. He enjoyed growing tomatoes and fresh herbs and loved to cook.
Services: There are no calling hours. The funeral will be held Monday, August 5, 2024, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 AM in Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meeting House Road, Bedford, NH.
Burial with military honors will follow in at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, NH.
