Rita M. (Steffan) Gestwicki
Rita M. (Steffan) Gestwicki, 95, of Dunkirk, entered eternal rest on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Brooks Memorial Hospital. Born on September 12, 1929 in Dunkirk, wife of the late Gerald Gestwicki and daughter of the late Peter and Martha “Irene” (Sweet) Steffan.
She lived in Dunkirk her entire life, graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in 1947 and marrying Gerald Gestwicki that same year. Together they raised four children, actively participated in the life of both St. Hyacinth’s Church and School, and enjoyed cards and companionship with family and treasured friends. Gerald passed in 1986 following 38 years of loving marriage. Rita’s independent nature became apparent during her 38 years as a widow. She seldom asked for or accepted help, but gave it willingly.
Rita enjoyed the company of many dogs over the years, walking miles with them everyday in the First Ward or at Point Gratiot. She spent as much time as possible near Lake Erie. She watched every Buffalo Bills game and was also a Yankee fan (especially a Derek Jeter fan). She was an excellent cook and baker, sharing these skills and many recipes with her grandchildren.
Rita is survived by her children Thomas (Andrea) Gestwicki, Frederick Gestwicki, Sally (David) Young, and Amy (Robert) Benzing; 14 grandchildren and their spouses and partners; over 20 great-grandchildren; a brother James Steffan; two nephews and many friends and admirers.
In addition to her husband and parents, Rita is preceded in death by her infant granddaughter Heather Rita Benzing.
Friends and family are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 4-7 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 10 a.m. at BMA Church of St. Hyacinth. Interment in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery
