James F. Scarpine

James F. Scarpine, 71, of Westfield, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Jan. 13, 2025, at ECMC in Buffalo, NY, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness.

Jim was born on Dec. 19, 1953, in Westfield, NY, the son of the late Robert and Ethel (Peck Scarpine. He married Diane Young on Dec. 16, 1978, at the United Methodist Church in Westfield, and together they raised four beloved daughters.

A proud 1972 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central School, Jim then earned a BA in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Cornell University. Throughout his career, he worked in a variety of roles, including as manager of Stack’s Place in Northeast, PA, a customer service representative and sales professional for Belknap Business Forms in Mayville, NY, an insurance agent, a wind lease agent, and the owner/operator of Dooner and Daughters landscaping.

Jim’s greatest joy was his family. He was deeply involved in coaching and managing youth sports, planning holidays, and organizing special events. A beloved member of the family, his dog, Burt, was never far from his side. Jim enjoyed taking Burt on daily car rides around town. He was a proud supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, attending countless sporting events and celebrating their accomplishments.

Known for his competitive spirit and sense of fair play, Jim was a natural athlete who loved playing sports and always made time to offer advice and mentorship to others. His passion for sports extended beyond his own involvement, and he especially enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills, baseball, and golf.

Jim even had the unforgettable experience of attending Super Bowl XXV (wide right) with Diane when the Bills played the NY Giants.

Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield and the Sons of the American Legion, where he held various offices, including Vice Commander and Historian. A lover of music, Jim played trumpet with several bands during his younger years.

Jim, affectionately known as “Dooner” is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diane Scarpine; four daughters, Nicole (Todd) Corbett, Brittany (Derek) Edwards, Jill (Chevy) Latta, and Jamie (Tim) Johnson; eight cherished grandchildren, Jonathan, Cameron, and Arielle Corbett, Norah and Connor Johnson, Cecilia Edwards, and Quinn and Bodie Latta; a dear brother, Charles (Lynn) Scarpine; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Interment will be private in the Union Cemetery at a later date.
