Robert A. Groesch

Robert A. Groesch died peacefully with family by his side Jan. 20, 2025. Born Nov. 18, 1931, he lived a long 93 years in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area. Born in Dunkirk to Mabel Michalske and Andrew Groesch, he attended St Mary’s School and graduated from Dunkirk High School. Robert continued his education and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with a degree in engineering. He used his engineering skills throughout the years working at Alco in Dunkirk, Struther’s in Warren, Pa and ITT Standard in Cheektowaga to name a few. He was married for over 50 golden years to his wife Kay Scribner Groesch and raised two children David and Susan. Robert was a life member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Cardinal Mindszenty Assembly 727. He received the Lay Award of St. Joseph- selected by his excellency Most Reverend Henry J. Mansell in recognition of outstanding meritorious service to St. Joseph Church, Fredonia where he attended church regularly. He spent many years overseeing building projects and spring flowers in and around St. Joseph’s Parish.

Attending swimming and sports activities of his children and others have been enjoyed through the years, especially competitive swimming and diving. Robert spent more than 10 years as a Swimming/Diving Official in Chautauqua County, Erie County and for Fredonia State University. Whenever there was a sports need in the community, including fundraising, Bob was at the helm. Initiated swimming programs at the YMCA In Dunkirk and the Hammerhead Swim Club. Need a chaperone for Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, youth groups, sporting events, he was there. Construction project? “Yes please” and by the way, we’ll do it my way (no cutting corners, only the very best)! Bob was best known for keeping watch of his neighborhood. From dog walkers to tractor drivers, he was always outside in the garage waving to passers by. He appreciated all the love and support of his neighbors.

Survivors include his daughter Susan (Floyd) Kurgan; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren Thomas S. Kolassa, Kimberly (Dan) Sturzenbecher and family (Mia, Ava, Sadie, Theodore), Alexander (Jillian) Kurgan and Finley, Rian Budzinski, Natalie Groesch, James Matteson, Andrew Matteson; and honorary family – Julie Danielsen Rusboldt, John Danielsen, Rob Danielsen and Dave Boyda. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife Kay (May 11, 2008) and beloved son David (March 16, 2022).
