Dunkirk — Lydia (Torres) DeJesus, 94, of Dunkirk, passed away Thursday morning, February 6, 2025 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico on January 30, 1931, wife of the late Julio M. DeJesus Sr., and the daughter of the late Felix and Maria (Fernandez) Torres.
For many years, Lydia owned and operated a grocery store with her husband on Second Street in Dunkirk, where she became a familiar and friendly presence to her patrons. After dedicating those years to their business, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her role as a beloved homemaker.
Her love for cooking became a defining aspect of her life; she found joy in preparing meals and was always ready to feed anyone who stopped by, regardless of whether they were hungry or not. Lydia’s nurturing nature extended beyond her family as she treated everyone with kindness and respect, making her a well-known and beloved member of the Dunkirk community.
She was also known for her loving personality, combining a sense of humor with a quiet, reserved demeanor. Her love for animals was a testament to her gentle spirit.
Lydia was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church. She found strength and solace in her faith, and actively participated in the church community.
Survivors include her children Carlos M. (Mary Ann) DeJesus, Julio M. (Ana) DeJesus Jr., Anna (Juan) Esquilin, and Jose A. (Daisy) DeJesus; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Lydia is preceded by her daughter Miriam Montanez and her son, Jose L. DeJesus.
Friends and family are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 4-7 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
