Keith C. Johnston

Keith C. Johnston

Keith C. Johnston, 85, of 62 Morris St., died Monday, March 31, in Hamot Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Mayville, NY, the son of the late Robert and Eleanor Raynor Johnston. He was a member of the Mayville Central School class of 1957.

Keith proudly served in the US Navy at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (TX). He loved telling people how he spent four years in the Navy and never once set foot on a ship.

He was employed as shipping clerk for the former Standard Portable Products in Mayville.

He was quite artistic and loved any types of crafts that would allow his creativity to flourish, as long as his beloved cats, Shirley, Squiggy, Johnny, and June, allowed him to.

Keith was a fixture for decades at Mayville and Chautauqua Lake high school sporting events. He and his friend, the late Newt Wright, would attend virtually every football game to cheer on their team. He was also a walking encyclopedia of stats for high school players in the area. He loved supporting the Cleveland Indians and Browns, as well as the Texas Longhorns and UConn women’s basketball.

He is survived by a son, Brandon K. Johnston of Mayville; a brother, Michael Johnston of Hamburg; two sisters, Linda (Jack) Hull of Steadman, Wendy Bell of Lakewood; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Roxanne Gleason Johnston, whom he married Oct. 1, 1966; one daughter, Kerry Johnston; one son, Kris Johnston; three brothers, Rod and Ken Johnston (both of Erie), and Larry Johnston of Westfield.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Freay Funeral Home 139 S. Erie St., Mayville. The funeral will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, April 10, 2025, also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
