Board still not in tune with voters

Comments made by Fredonia school board members during a meeting on Jan. 7 directed at the voting public are concerning in reference to capital proposals two and three, which were decisively rejected in December.

One comment directed at district residents was “willful ignorance” for what a board member perceives as the voters lack of understanding of how capital projects are funded concerning the state’s contribution on Proposal 2, which called for upgrades for the music program.

Board comments also admitted to dismissing suggestions from taxpayers on alternative funding ideas. “This is a public school. This isn’t the Little League. We’re not selling candy bars to put up an athletic field for students.”

Likewise, a commentary in the paper with a different point of view was labeled “ill-informed” and “disingenuous” information. Board comments further devolved into taking issue with another member who was perceived to have taken too much of a pro-business stance in tamping down the proposed projects. As if creating a business friendly environment somehow was at odds with students.

Comments also questioned why one voter’s sizable property investment should complain about a tax increase, apparently assuming money is no object. Other silly comments made by the board attributed the defeat to voters lacking Fredonia pride, being purposely ill informed, and not prioritizing.

It should be communicated to the board that this is more of an issue of responsible stewardship of the school district’s finances that are a reflection and proportional to the community’s financial status.

Businesses and households know where their bottom lines are and they decided through their votes. Any attempt to spin this otherwise is willful arrogance by the school board and gives the appearance of pushing their own ideas versus the people who they are supposed to represent. As one board member stated, “We need to go out and speak to residents and listen … but I don’t think we have that luxury.”

Comments such as these can only be attributed to those living in a bubble or echo chamber. Eyes are now looking toward the annual budget vote in May. Will the board seek retribution?
