Who’s next to be expendable?
Editor, OBSERVER:
In a recent commentary “Sore losers continue futile efforts” (March 27) the author asserts: “It’s obvious that he (the judge) has a bias against (President Donald) Trump and to spite Trump he apparently favors keeping these illegal alien rapists, murderers, and thieves in our nation.”
As an American woman, I can assure the writer that I have no desire to see our nation favor rapists and murderers. As an American citizen, I remind (or possibly inform) him that our system guarantees every person due process under the law. Punishment follows after – not before — individual guilt has been established. Why the rush to invoke an old wartime law which does not apply? The accused were in custody. There was time for review.
I’m reminded of the poem by Martin Niemoller:
“First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist. Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.”
I believe that the commentary writer may be elderly, possibly with health issues (judging from previous articles). Is it far-fetched to think that an unchecked executive could see him and his group as expendable? Food for thought!
