Thirty years ago — 1990
The West Portland Baptist Church honored its pastor, the Rev. Gary Henry, at a reception held on April 1 in the church fellowship. Pastor Henry has been the pastor at the church for the past 20 years. In recent years the church has experienced real growth and is now a vital part of the communities of Westfield and Brocton. The Sunday School program has nearly 100 students and there are well over 100 regular attendees of the church ministry.
Forty years ago — 1980
Four Silver Creek High School students and their art instructor, Phil DePalma, designed and painted a 23-foot banner for the Northern Chautauqua Someplace Special campaign. The village government is looking for a place to display the banner where wind and vandals won’t be a threat. The students are Cheryl Fox, Chuck Militello, Eva Raudsepp and Leslie Allaire.
Fifty years ago — 1970
Dr. George C. Browder, assistant professor of history at Fredonia State University College, has been awarded a summer stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award will enable him to pursue study on “Security Police and Intelligence Service of Nazi Germany.”
