Thirty years ago — 1993
Michael Davis, a Dunkirk High School Class of 1987 graduate currently living in Laguna Hills, Calif., reported that the house he resides in survived the raging California fire “that was right in our backyard.” Mr. Davis, who has lived in California for five years, described it as “quite an experience.” The fires have been labeled the worst of this century. His parents are Joseph and Rita Davis of Dunkirk.
Forty years ago — 1983
Rehearsals are under way for the Fredonia Junior Miss Pageant to be sponsored by the Fredonia JayNcees — the 12 candidates are rehearsing at the Fredonia High School where the pageant will be presented Nov. 22. Vying for the crown are Marie Lopez, Lisa Corsi, Margaret Boettcher, Lynn Wisniewski, Stephanie Pulvino, Eva Forbes, Mary Kuzdale and Dawn Warren, all of Dunkirk; Linda McMullen, Michelle Pagano, Beth Bray and Kathy Kenney of Fredonia.

The Federal Trade Commission ruled that Wonder Bread, the country’s largest selling white bread, has been falsely advertising itself the past decade as an extraordinary food which will cause dramatic growth in children.
