SPORTS UB football takes big step with win
Today’s discussion on Buffalo sports is likely to center around Monday night’s Bills-Jacksonville Jaguars game. But there is a collegiate team that is aiming to do some big things this year.
On Saturday the University at Buffalo Bulls upset No. 23 Northern Illinois University — on the road — 23-20 in overtime. It was the Huskies who hold the distinction for the biggest upset of the year — knocking off Notre Dame two weeks ago in South Bend, Ind.
But the Bulls and first-year Coach Pete Lembo were not deterred. After a sluggish first half — trailing 14-3 — UB quickly got its first touchdown and watched its defense play up to its potential in shutting down Northern Illinois.
“That’s actually what our defense talked about all week – a 12-round fight, and making sure we were blow for blow through all 12 rounds, and you’re exactly right,” Lembo, who is in his first year with UB, told The Buffalo News. “This one went the full distance.”
For the Bulls, it was only their second win against a Top 25 ranked team. At 3-1, you have to wonder if this is just the start of something bigger.
