NFL: County native, Eagles in spotlight
In a few weeks, Nick Sirianni will add the title of Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame member to his already glowing resume.
The Southwestern High School graduate has another prize in sight. We’re talking, of course, about the title of Super Bowl champion. Buffalo Bills fans had hoped the hometown team would be playing in the big game on Feb. 9. Their hopes were dashed — again — by the Kansas City Chiefs. Sirianni has his own history with the Chiefs, having lost to the two-time defending Super Bowl champions back in 2023 by a 38-35 score.
Whatever happens in New Orleans on Feb. 9, Sirianni finds himself moving from the hot seat to rarified air in a few short months. After a rocky end to the 2023 season that saw the team stumble down the stretch followed by a tough first couple of weeks this year, Eagles fans were calling for Sirianni to be fired. Instead, Sirianni and the Eagles won 10 of their final 11 games before running their way through the NFC playoffs.
Philly fans who back in September thought Sirianni should be watching the Super Bowl along with the rest of us will be watching Sirianni coach in the big game for the second time in three years. Since 2000, according to our Scott Kindberg, only five other coaches have accomplished that feat – Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin and Pete Carroll. Kindberg also reminded our readers of a few other tidbits from Sirianni’s short, but sweet, run as Eagles head coach:
— Hired in January 2021, the youngest son of Fran and Amy Sirianni has 52 victories, including playoffs, which places him in front of Matt Lafleur (49), Jim Harbaugh (49) and John Harbaugh (49) for the most wins in the first four seasons as a head coach.
— Sirianni has the sixth-best career regular-season winning percentage all-time for head coaches (48-20, .706); the best active regular-season winning percentage among head coaches (48-20, .706); the third-best regular-season winning percentage among head coaches since 2021 (48-20, .706); and the best career and the best regular-season winning percentage in the first four seasons among Eagles head coaches (48-20, .706).
That’s pretty heady company.
We’re sure Chautauqua County’s contingent of Bills fans are disappointed.
But Sirianni’s success gives all of us locally someone to root for in the Super Bowl. If things go well, Chautauqua County may be inducting a new Super Bowl winner into its Sports Hall of Fame.
