County: Solving murders was team effort
In September 2021, our region — and especially the town of Portland — was in shock. On consecutive days, remains were found along the Chautauqua Rails to Trails along Woleben Road.
A quiet and scenic portion of the north county had become a crime scene for days as numerous police vehicles made the trek to the location. More than three years later, this community and Buffalo families have some closure.
Last week, the second victim found was identified in a press conference in Buffalo. A team effort led to a second murder charge for Richard Fox.
“As a result of the diligent and collaborative work of this multi-agency investigation, I am pleased to announce an indictment against this defendant and the identity of the second victim. The families of Cassandra Watson and Marquita Mull have waited a long time for answers, and we are committed to obtaining justice for the victims. Our investigation remains ongoing, and I encourage anyone who may have information about the defendant or the victims to contact my office,” said Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane.
Numerous agencies assisted in the investigation, including Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the New York State Police, Lakewood-Busti Police Department and the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.
If convicted, Fox — a sex offender – faces 50 years to life in prison.
