FIRE MERGERS: Testing the waters in Brocton, Portland

A contentious issue seems to be cautiously moving forward when it comes to consolidation of the village and Brocton and town of Portland fire departments. One of the most respected area individuals when it comes to volunteering for his community spoke about the issue last month.

Dave Hazelton, an Emergency Medical Technician and former member of the Brocton Village Board, indicated he will be involved in the discussions to facilitate the process. Hazelton said of a potential merger, “It seems to be the popular thing to do.”

Last week, five volunteer departments in Hanover were not as certain.

Only two of those who gathered — Silver Creek and Sunset Bay — are considering joining forces at the moment.

With Brocton and Portland, there has always been strong sentiment to keep the departments separate — especially from long-term members. We hope their stance has softened seeing how the village and town share services as well as positions in the town highway superintendent.

A meeting will take place next week on the issue in the town. This is something that is likely long overdue — but change is very tough when it comes to Chautauqua County.

Starting at $2.99/week.
