DUNKIRK: City needs less talk, more action

Dunkirk is currently facing a $20.5 million budget gap, according to the New York state comptroller’s office. Unfortunately, that issue rarely comes up during the Common Council meetings.

Talking points at the two monthly meetings, instead, focus on personalities, grievances or an elimination of a position. How’s that for a lack of priorities?

But this is ultimately what got the city of Dunkirk into this position over the last five years. Never mind how much the city government was spending, make sure the theatrics at meetings grab some attention.

What council can do, since it is headed by three Republicans, is jump on the state Sen. George Borrello bandwagon in calling for a control board. In a news release issued last month, Borrello noted the dire situation.

“Over the past several months I have had many conversations with the mayor, city council members and county and state leaders, including New York state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, as well as constituents who are very concerned about the future of the city. To that end, I have tried my best to be supportive and allow the process to continue under local control,” he said. “However, the problems have proven to be too large and complex. With an 84% property tax increase already in place and essential services at risk, it’s time for the state to step in and provide the necessary resources and oversight to restore fiscal stability and ensure long-term accountability.”

Last year’s deficit was known to be around $16.5 million. That is what the city borrowed to make ends meet.

Since then, spending has continued to not keep up with revenues as the deficit reached more than $20 million. At the moment, council has shown no ability to even begin planning to fix the finances. If an 84% property tax increase was unbearable for residents this year, continued inaction and bickering by city leaders will only make it worse in 2026.

Council’s endorsement of a control board is not only one potential solution, it also shows residents they are taking action. That’s a lot better than the current status, which is all talk.
