WESTFIELD: Chance to build on a downtown

One of the more vibrant downtowns in northern Chautauqua County received a chance to build on its success. Last week, New York state announced Westfield was the recipient of a $4.5 million NY Forward award.

“Westfield is a charming village that graces the southern shore of Lake Erie. This picturesque locale is defined by its stunning waterfront vistas and a wealth of recreational opportunities, inviting residents and visitors to embrace the natural beauty that surrounds them. Visitors and residents enjoy Westfield events like First Fridays, the Arts and Crafts Festival, the weekly Farmer’s Market, the Tour Chautauqua Cycling Event, the Grape and Wine Festival, Christmas in the Village, the Hot Toddy Crawl and the Christmas Cookie weekend,” the award announcement noted. “Historically, Westfield’s economy depended on agriculture and industry. Westfield’s vision is to cultivate a vibrant and sustainable community that celebrates its rich history, natural beauty and agricultural heritage while fostering economic growth, creating housing choices and celebrating diverse cultural activities in a safe and welcoming environment.”

In recent years, its Main Street has been a role model for others. Storefronts are filled and traffic flows at a consistent pace while also being pedestrian friendly. Additionally, its First Friday events during the summer highlight small business while adding to the foot traffic.

Downtown Revitalization Initiatives throughout New York state have seen mixed results. Locally, Dunkirk and Jamestown were awarded $10 million — with little improvement noted.

Westfield, with its charm, has a chance to change that outcome.

Starting at $2.99/week.
