JAMESTOWN — The mark of a good team is one that can beat you in many different ways.

On Saturday afternoon, the Clymer Pirates were successful in many aspects of the game and were rewarded with a 47-37 victory over host Maple Grove in the championship game of the Maple Grove Tip-Off Tournament at Maple Grove Junior-Senior High School.

“Right now, I really feel things are starting to click,” Clymer head coach Dave Bodamer said. “In these last two games, they are understanding more of what we want to do and accomplishing it.”

Sophomore Alexys Neckers led a balanced Clymer (4-1) attack with 12 points, senior Karlen Honey had 10, juniors Aurora Ordines and Abby White each had 9, and senior Mikala Einink had 7.

“They have energy. They’re young,” Bodamer said of his Pirates, who only have six healthy players. ” … There are a few girls every game who have to play all 32 minutes. … I’m really happy with how they handled it.”

Senior Madi Price led the Red Dragons (1-2) with 21 points and junior Courtney Martin added 13, but the only other Maple Grove player to score was junior Erin Mansfield when she made a 3-pointer for the Red Dragons’ final basket of the game.

“Thirty-something points isn’t going to cut it. We have to find some more offense somewhere,” Maple Grove head coach Bill Price said. ” … It’s early. We have some things we have to fix.”

Maple Grove led 4-1 early, but Clymer took control with a 10-0 run that included three baskets off Red Dragons turnovers. Honey had 6 points during the 13-6 first quarter and the Pirates never trailed again.

“They just were quicker than us,” Coach Price said. “We were reacting the whole game.”

Martin scored to make it a 15-10 game midway through the second quarter, but a 6-0 run pushed Clymer’s lead back up to 11. Maple Grove answered with an 8-2 run, but Einink hit a free throw on the Pirates’ final possession of the second quarter and the Red Dragons missed a 3-point attempt just before the first-half buzzer as the teams to their locker rooms with Clymer leading 24-18.

“They moved the ball well and we weren’t good enough defensively,” Coach Price said.

Martin opened the third quarter with her only 3-pointer of the game to make it 24-21, but the Pirates quickly answered with another 8-0 run as four different players made baskets to once again make it an 11-point game. Einink’s second-chance basket at the end of the third quarter made it 39-25 heading to the fourth quarter.

Maple Grove made it a nine-point game with 1:42 remaining on a 3-pointer by Madi Price, but Ordines hit a long 2-pointer and Neckers scored inside in the final minutes to put the game away.

For the game, Clymer was 21 of 56 (37.5%) from the field and turned the ball over just seven times — once in the second half.

“They are mature enough where they are understanding our situation,” Bodamer said of his team’s short bench. ” … The other night against Ellicottville was rough, but we’ve come back in two straight games with being efficient and playing much better.”

Maple Grove, on the other hand, was 15 of 42 (35.7%) from the field and turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 18 Pirates’ points.

“We just couldn’t score,” Coach Price said. “It’s tough to win when you can’t score.”

NOTES: Honey led Clymer with 10 rebounds; White had six rebounds and two steals; junior Natalie Johnson had six rebounds; and Neckers had four steals. … Martin had six rebounds and two blocked shots; Madi Price had six rebounds; and Mansfield had four assists and three steals for Maple Grove. … Panama won the jayvee championship over Clymer.

CONSOLATION GAME

Senior Abby Rice scored 11 of her game-high 23 points during a 20-6 third quarter as Silver Creek pulled away from Salamanca for a 44-30 victory in the consolation game.

Rice finished with nine rebounds, six steals, four assists and three blocked shots for the Black Knights (2-1).

Silver Creek led 7-2 early in the game, but a slew of misses inside of 5 feet allowed the Warriors (0-4) to take a 9-7 lead into the second quarter.

Salamanca maintained that lead for much of the second quarter until junior Maidre Arenas hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Black Knights a two-point lead at halftime.

Rice then found Arenas alone under the basket for a bucket just before the buzzer as Silver Creek carried a 34-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

Arenas finished with 10 points, three assists and three steals while senior Jade Bouvier added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Lezly McComber led the Warriors with 11 points, 15 rebounds and five steals while sophomore Bella Wolfe, senior Jillian Rea and eighth-grader Makenzie Crouse each grabbed five rebounds.
