Huskies down Marauders 10-0

OLEAN — Before he headed to the third-base coach’s box midway through Wednesday’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 season opener, Frank Jagoda said — to no one in particular — “Momma said there would be days like this.”

Or, maybe, the longtime Dunkirk baseball coach could have replaced “days” for “half-innings.”

With Jagoda one win shy of setting the school’s all-time baseball wins record, Olean scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to break open a tight game en route to a 10-0 shutout that ended midway through the fifth via the 10-run rule.

“As soon I looked up, the score was going somewhere,” Jagoda said.

The Huskies sent 14 batters to the plate in the decisive frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Ethan Sumcinski and a two-run double by Thomas Bates. Two hit batters, a pair of errors and three walks gave the hosts plenty of breathing room, allowing them to leave Franchot Park with the victory.

“We hit a batter to lead off the inning and things snowballed from there,” Jagoda said. “And Olean hit the ball. They hit the fastball well.”

Winning pitcher Railey Silvis allowed only one hit — a two-out single in the fifth inning to Alex Ahlstrom — struck out four and walked four. The Marauders’ Scott Korzenski took the loss, working 3 1/3 innings, before giving way to Zach Zentz.

Dunkirk had a runner reach third each of the first three innings, but it wasn’t able to deliver a key hit. And after Silvis retired the Marauders on four pitches in the fourth, the Huskies gave the right-hander all the runs he would need in their subsequent at-bat.

“I thought we’d come out and hit the ball better, but (Silvis) mixed his pitches well,” Jagoda said. “In the first three innings, I thought we took too many pitches. We were getting into non-hitting counts. In the fourth inning, we had a four-pitch inning. We finally identified he was right there and we stung the ball a little bit.”

The Marauders will be back in action Friday when they take on Falconer in a CCAA Division 1 game.

“The good thing about our league this year is there are 14 league games. Everybody is going to challenge each other. … If Olean plays that way and hits the ball like they did today, they’re going to be successful and so are we.”

Fittingly, tomorrow’s game will be at Al Stuhlmiller Field. Stuhlmiller coached at Dunkirk from 1955-1983 where he amassed 360 career wins. Jagoda, who played for the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Famer for three seasons (1977-79), will have a chance to surpass Stuhlmiller’s victory if the Marauders knock off the Golden Falcons.

“I have a lot of sentiment for Coach Stuhlmiller,” Jagoda said. “We’re going to do it on his field, but we better come out and hit the ball a little bit better than we did today, because I’m assuming there will be some people there and they’re going to want to see a better performance.”
