JCC women in second after first day at NJCAA swimming meet
BUFFALO — The Jamestown Community College women’s swim team began its quest for a third straight National Junior College Athletic Association Non-Scholarship Swimming & Diving National Championship on Wednesday at the Burt Flickinger Center.
Lindsey Spitz (Jamestown/Jamestown HS) highlighted the day with two top-16 finishes, in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley. Spitz swam a personal-best time of 32.96 for 11th in the 50-yard freestyle and then had a four-second drop for another personal best in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:28.11.
Hannah Eckert (Frewsburg/Frewsburg CS) also swam a personal best in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.53.
The women also reached the podium in the 800 yard freestyle relay as the quartet of Eckert, Stacey Blacker (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale HS), Kylee Hennessy (Warren, Pennsylvania/Warren Area HS) and Spitz swam a personal-best time of 9:42.06. Their time was a nine-second improvement from the regional meet and earned them sixth place.
Currently the women sit in second place with 38 points, Monroe Community College leads the way with 49 and Genesee Community College is right on Jamestown CC’s heels with 36.
“Overall it was a good day for us,” Jayhawks head coach Todd Conklin said. “We finished with some really good momentum. Everyone swims tomorrow, so we’re really looking forward to getting everyone involved. We’re looking to put ourselves in the forefront heading into day three.”
MEN
The men did not have a top-16 finish to get on the scoreboard, but it did see a few personal-best swims.
Joseph Keyser (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake CS), Steven Zentz (Dunkirk/Dunkirk HS) and Josh Carr (Wigan, England/Standish Community HS) swam personal bests. Keyser posted a time of 24.17 in the 50-yard freestyle, which was one second better than his previous time. Both Zentz and Carr swam personal bests in the 50-yard breaststroke.
But it was Maxim Johnson (Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School) standing out for the men’s team. Johnson continues to rewrite the Jamestown CC record book with another personal best in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.66.
