WEST ELLICOTT — The Southwestern and Allegany-Limestone girls soccer teams came into Monday’s game at Charles A. Lawson Field on top of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West and Section VI Class B2. On the line was not only a league title, but the top seed in the sectional playoffs.

Just like in their first matchup the Trojans were able to strike first, but two second-half Allegany-Limestone goals were enough to give the Gators a 2-1 win and their first league title since 2019.

Both sides were unable to find the back of the net in the first half with Allegany-Limestone coming close in the 13th minute when Cait Kellogg broke past Southwestern goalkeeper Braya Beaver, but good defensive pressure forced a bad shot wide. As the half progressed, Southwestern developed more possession and chances, but nothing broke through until the second half.

That first half momentum built by Southwestern paid off in just the 43rd minute when Emma Malmstrom-Jouannet found the back of the net with an assist from Kaylyn Carnes.

Southwestern (11-3-1, 9-2-0) held that lead for about 20 minutes, then Allegany-Limestone’s counterattack paid off with Liza Giardini finishing off a ball played into the box by Addie Fisher. From there the Gators had all the momentum and in just another two minutes Cait Kellogg capitalized on a Southwestern defensive miscue where she found herself alone against Beaver to slot home the game-winning goal.

Allegany-Limestone (13-2-1, 10-1-1) kept pressuring the Trojans, but Beaver turned aside the remaining shots and finished with five saves while Chloe Baker fought off a final push from Southwestern and ended with five saves and the win.
