Calph wins 6th Wed. Travel League event of season

IRVING — Robert Calph won his sixth Wednesday Travel League event of the season with a new league course record 74 at Rose Brook Golf Course.

Calph broke his own record of 75. Jeff Marsowicz finished second with a personal low league score of 78. In a tie for third with 79s were Jeff Nelson and John Waterman. Calph led the front nine with 38 and Nelson led the back nine with a 2-under par 33.

The B Flight winner was Dave Criscione. In the C Flight, Phil Hopkins won on a tiebreaker with Mike Willoughby. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Dennis Gawronski Sr.

Two golfers recorded their first eagles in league play. Dave Franklin putted in from the front fringe for an eagle-3 on the par-5 15th. Jeff Nelson reached the par-5 18th green in two shots and sunk his eagle putt.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Waterman (No. 3), Marsowicz (No. 12), Franklin (Nos. 13, 15, eagle) and Nelson (Nos. 14, 16, 18, eagle); B Flight — Dave Wallace (Nos. 3, 17), Don Kujawa (No. 10), Criscione (No. 14) and Tony Destro (No. 16); C Flight — Pete Gawron (No. 4), Pete Pinkoski (No. 8), Bob Kujawa (No. 12), Gawronski (No. 14) and Willoughby (No.17).

Closest to the pin were: Tom Destro (No. 4), Ed Tofil (No. 10), Marsowicz (No. 12), Ken Kaus (No. 13) and Nelson (No. 16). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tofil (A Flight), Jack Hood (B) and Hopkins (C).

Top point winners were: Nelson (68), Franklin (45), Marsowicz (41), and Gawron and Bob Kujawa (27 apiece). Season points leaders (through 18 events): 1. Josh Hilliker (589), 2. Gary Haase (274), 3. Calph (263), 4. Pinkoski (247), 5. Tofil (246), 6. Nelson (226), 7. Tom Sacilowski (224), 8. Wallace (212), 9. Franklin (186), 10. Bob Kujawa (143). Tom Destro broke into the top-20 on the All-Time Points List, moving into 19th place, bumping John Bongiovanni Jr. out of the top-20 and also passing Lenny Leszkowicz (now 20th).

This week the league holds its third major of the season with the “U.S. Open” at Kane Country Club in Kane, Pennsylvania. The first group tees off at 10 a.m. The field is full at this time, but golfers can be put on the alternate list.
