Westfield/Brocton surprises Portville in ‘C’
PORTVILLE — Carson Swanson scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 48th minute as No. 6 Westfield/Brocton upset No. 3 Portville 2-1 in a Section VI Class C boys soccer quarterfinal Thursday.
Nate Laurito opened the scoring for the Wolverines with a goal from Swanson in the third minute.
After the Panthers tied the game, Swanson netted the second-half winner from Noah Tuah.
Nolan Anderson made 12 saves in net for Westfield/Brocton, which will travel to No. 2 Allegany-Limestone for a semifinal Wednesday.
FREDONIA WINS IN BUFFALO
BUFFALO — No. 6 Fredonia defeated No. 3 Riverside/Da Vinci 2-1 at Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium in the Class B1 quarterfinals.
The Hillbillies advance to Monday’s semifinals at No. 2 East Aurora.
Aiden Czekanski scored in the 25th minute of the first half to put Fredonia in the lead, 1-0, which they held at the half. Mason Tomaszewski had the assist.
In the second half, Riverside/Da Vinci scored its lone goal in the 55th minute.
R.J. Koopman scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute off an assist from Kadin Ritenburg.
Andrew Cowan had five saves in net.
The Hillbillies finished with 10 shots on goal.
CARDS OUST MAPLE GROVE
RANDOLPH — Cooper Freeman scored a pair of first-half goals as No. 4 Randolph took a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes en route to a 5-1 Section VI Class C quarterfinal victory over No. 5 Maple Grove at Raymond Van Wie Field on Thursday.
Freeman opened the scoring in the 14th minute from Griffin Nelson and Cody Slade made it 2-0 from Freeman in the 23rd minute. Freeman capped the first-half scoring with a goal from Isaac Pihlblad in the 26th minute.
After halftime, Nelson scored from Slade in the 41st minute and Slade scored from Gavin Richardson in the final minute.
Arley Culver scored the lone goal for the Red Dragons. Liam Colburn made seven saves in defeat.
Delsin Tallchief made five saves for Randolph, which will travel to No. 1 Wilson on Monday for a semifinal.
WILSON ELIMINATES EAGLES
WILSON — No. 1 Wilson scored a goal in each half to beat No. 8 Chautauqua Lake 2-0 in a Class C quarterfinal.
Mason Schultz scored in the 34th minute and Keegan Herrmann scored from Aidan Neumann in the 71st minute for the Lakemen, who will host No. 4 Randolph in a semifinal Wednesday.
Brendan Klossner made 23 saves in net for the Eagles.
SOUTHWESTERN COASTS
WEST ELLICOTT — Southwestern’s sectional title defense picked up right where it left off last year as Connor Young netted a hat trick and an assist in 7-0 Class B2 quarterfinal victory over Eden at Charles A. Lawson Field.
Seth Vaughn added a goal and two assists for the top-seeded Trojans, Ryan Ohl scored in the first half, while Nolan Lefler and Bergen Nelson potted the final two goals, respectively, and Chase Hartnett picked up an assist.
Southwestern hosts No. 5 Akon for a semifinal matchup on Monday at 7 p.m.
BLACK KNIGHTS FALL
MEDINA — No. 2 Medina beat No. 7 Silver Creek/Forestville 12-0 in a Class B2 quarterfinal.
The Mustangs will host No. 3 Cassadaga Valley/Falconer in a semifinal Monday at 6:30 p.m.
