CROSS COUNTRY
Two weekends ago at the SUNYAC championship meet, Sembel Koshi finished fifth overall and had his name added to the conference men’s cross country Hall of Fame.
The Fredonia State senior, who’ll graduate in December, added another honor Saturday: NCAA all-region. He did so by finishing 30th at the Division III Niagara Region meet, held on campus, with a final time of 26:24.9. He covered his final collegiate 1,000 meters in 3:11.6, his fastest split of the 8,000-meter race.
The top 35 finishers in the race earn all-region honors.
The other six Fredonia State runners in the race give head coach Tom Wilson reason for optimism for the future. They, in order of finish, are sophomore Kevin Moser, freshman Edward Jourdan, freshman Lucas Peterson-Volz and sophomore Quillan Shimp, followed by displacement finishers freshman Stephen Hallberg and sophomore Aiden VanAmburg.
Fredonia State finished 13th overall in the regional, won by New York University, which defeated runner-up Geneseo by one point. Brockport finished third. There were 22 full teams in the race and 170 total starters.
Calie Hudson was the top runner for the Fredonia State women.
Hudson, a freshman, covered the 6,000-meter layout in 24:45.3 to finish 75th in a field of 156 women. Her 4:00.1 first 1,000 meters and her 4:05.0 final 1,000 were her two fastest splits.
Fredonia State had four other women compete on the home course. Holly Rohrbach was 103rd, Amilcar Centeno 107th, Vanessa Ryhal 120th and Elizabeth Wagner 131st.
New York University edged Geneseo for the team championship. NYU runners accumulated 32 points while Geneseo had 36. The University of Rochester was a distant third with 107 points.
