What’s old is new for the Jamestown Community College swimming and diving teams, as the women’s team won its second straight Western New York Athletic Conference meet of the year Wednesday in its home pool while the men claimed another second-place finish.

Things heated up quickly for the ladies, with Sophia Gervasio winning the 1,000-yard freestyle by more than 14 seconds and teammate Ella Fosberg brought home third.

The women kept claiming the podium spots in the 200-yard freestyle, where Emily Swan took second, less than a second behind the lead pace; Desiree Putt was third; and Addison Lawson was fourth.

Next up was the 50-yard freestyle. Jalyn Linton missed first by less than two-tenths of a second. Ashlynn Swan earned fifth.

Switching to the individual medleys, it was all Jayhawks, with Anna Jones capturing first and Haleigha Hardy second.

In diving, Ashlynn Swan showed why she finished fourth in the nation a year ago, winning the 1-meter by more than 60 points.

The 100-yard butterfly saw a second and third finish from Jamestown CC’s Linton and Jones.

The 100-yard freestyle was another good event for the Jayhawks; Emily Swan won by more than four seconds, with Gervasio capturing third.

Jamestown CC had a great showing in the 100-yard backstroke, with Putt winning by 16 seconds, ahead of teammate Fosberg in second.

The 500-yard freestyle was another one-two finish for the Jayhawks, with Lawson taking the crown and Gervasio second.

The 100-yard individual medley placed Jamestown CC in second, third, and fourth places with Emily Swan, Jones, and Putt doing the hard work.

Hardy and Fosberg finished second and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Lastly, the 400-yard freestyle relay saw the Jayhawks take home first with the team of Ashlynn Swan, Lawson, Hardy and Linton. The quartet was almost 40 seconds ahead of second.

On the men’s side, it was another win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with Owen Slojkowski bringing in the first-place finish.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Zach Johnson was just edged out for first place. Teammates Carl Alexander and Noah Miles earned fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Kyle Dean was outtouched for first by a tenth, and Cameron Milewski claimed fourth.

In diving, Milewski took second, just behind Monroe.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Miles brought home third and Slojkowski was fourth, while Milewski continued his strong performance in the 100-yard freestyle with a third-place showing.

The men also shined in the 100-yard backstroke. Kyle Dean broke a program record with his 57.74, and Randall Hall earned a third.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Alexander nailed down another top-three finish for Jamestown CC with a third-place effort.

The 100-yard individual medley had Dean bringing home third, less than a second off the leader’s pace.

Johnson cruised to a first in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning by more than a second. Camp finished in fifth.

Jamestown CC took third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Johnson, Slojkowski, Hall and Camp.

“Overall, both programs had a successful meet,” Jayhawks head coach Todd Conklin said. “Saturday we head to Monroe for the last part of our first quarter of the season. It will be a glance into where we are at. We are looking for continued success for both programs.”

Next up for both teams is the invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday at Monroe CC.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

JCC WINS AGAIN

PITTSBURGH — Thanks to a fast start, Jamestown Community College raised its record to 4-1 with a 61-54 victory over the CC of Allegheny College.

Jennica Berens led the way for the Jayhawks, who had an 18-7 advantage after the first quarter, with 16 points, Mula Truitt added 14, Courtney Martin had 10 and Alyson Canfield contributed 8.

Jamestown CC led 33-18 at halftime and was able to withstand a 35-point effort from CC of Allegheny County’s Skye Harris Butler. Teammate Lannie Henning added 11 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

JAYHAWKS LOSE CLOSE ONE

PITTSBURGH — The Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team carried a four-point lead into the second half, but struggled to close in another tough loss, this one 79-76 at CC of Allegheny County on Tuesday.

The Jayhawks built the early lead thanks in part to a team-high 21 points from Robert Russel off the bench. The freshman was joined in double-figures by two more rookies, with Marcus Wynter scoring 15 points and Travis Castro 19.

Wynter also added eight rebounds and six assists, both team-highs.

The loss knocks JCC down to 1-4 on the season.

The men hit the road again today at 6 p.m. when they visit Villa Maria.
