End of an era
Whipsnakes trade Zed Williams to Waterdogs
Arguably the best lacrosse Zed Williams has played in his professional career has come with the Maryland Whipsnakes, but that chapter has come to an end.
News broke Monday afternoon that the 2020 Jim Brown MVP was being traded from the Whipsnakes to the Philadelphia Waterdogs for attackman Matt Brandau along with draft pick swaps for each team.
Philadelphia acquired Williams along with the No. 23 pick in this year’s draft, adding plenty of goalscoring capabilities to a Waterdogs group that won just two games last year. Williams scored 31 points in 10 games last season to earn a spot on the league’s Second Team All-Pro.
On top of adding a former MVP the Waterdogs also have the top pick in the draft with a chance to quickly turn their fortunes.
The Whipsnakes will have trouble replacing Williams’ production as Brandau plays a different role in which he scored just four goals and two assists as a rookie.
This is not the first time Williams has been traded as a professional, being dealt by the Georgia Swarm to the Colorado Mammoth in the National Lacrosse League and not too long after he was raising the championship with his new team.
Currently, Williams is building off his strong season in the field with eight goals through three games in the indoor season which is tied for fourth in the leaderboards.
