Mohamad Narvaez takes third at A/B Inter-Divisional meet

HOUGHTON — The Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph indoor track and field team had quite the showing on Friday at the Section VI C/D Inter-Divisional meet at the Kerr-Pegula Field House at Houghton University, claiming first place in two events along with several top-five finishes.

Sophomore Sopheia Nelson-Bennett placed first in the 1,500-meter race walk with a time of 9:00.61, while her teammate and fellow sophomore Ava Krofka was fourth at 10:26.48. Then, keeping with the distance events, senior Cody Kent won the 1,600 meters at 4:39.42.

While Nelson-Bennett and Kent finished first, teammates Charles Sundquist, Mary Lundmark and Sydney Simmons were able to reach the second spot on the podium.

Sundquist showed his strength throwing in weight throw for second at 52 feet, 2 inches, just behind Lancaster’s Ayden Cronin at 52-7.75. Then, in the shot put, Sundquist hit 39-11 for second behind Williamsville North’s Josh Newman at 46-1. Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph senior Anthony Wood took fourth in the weight throw at 41-5.

Lundmark nearly won the girls pole vault, achieving the winning height of 9-0, but still finishing behind Williamsville North’s Gabby Hovak.

Simmons finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.56, just ahead of third-place teammate Olivia Hallenbeck at 9.60, while Hamburg’s Natalie Farrell ran 8.98 for first.

Sticking with the sprints, Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph senior Grace Lennon finished fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.75, while Inylah Spain of Depew won at 7.56.

Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph sophomore Grace Gilevski also finished fourth as she ran 12:33.99 in the 3,000 meters, which Emilia O’Leary of Holland/East Aurora won at 11:01.37.

Jacob Lewis had a strong showing at distance for Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph, running to fifth place with a time of 10:51.32, while Ricky Curiel of Clarence won at 10:12.36.

Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph added top-five finishes from Justin Martin in the triple jump at 39-1 and Brea Rubrecht in shot put at 28-10.

The Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph girls 1,600-meter relay added a top-three finish with a time of 4:37.22 from Lennon, Simmons, Nelson-Bennett and Lundmark. Hamburg won with a time of 4:27.20 from Chase Chudoba, Natalie Farrell, Madison Ferro and Abigail Putrino.

The Fredonia/Westfield team also cracked the top five among the C/D schools with sophomore Callie Draggett highlighting the event with a second-place finish in shot put at 31-6.5.

Mariella Russo and Elizabeth Saunders both reached 4-10 in the high jump for fourth and fifth, respectively, while Hamburg’s Chase Chudoba won at 5-2. Then, Fredonia/Westfield’s Delaney Kaiser took fifth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:48.74 as Hamburg’s Chudoba won at 1:45.20.

Shifting to Saturday, three area schools competed among the A/B Inter-Divisional squads in Jamestown, Salamanca and Dunkirk/Forestville/Silver Creek.

The Red & Green had several top finishes, including three in second place individually and a runnerup relay performance.

Jarren Cotter was second in the 300 meters at 36.15, just behind Orchard Park’s Steven Barlette at 35.93; Wyatt Olmstead was second at 1,600 meters with 4:57.28, just behind Yuset Bandomo Bosch from Tapestry Charter at 4:55.16; and Brighton Lumia was runnerup in the triple jump at 41-1, just behind Siem Welday from Tapestry at 41-1.50.

The boys 1,600-meter relay composed of Lumia, Cotter, Nathaniel Sanchez and Cameron Burgess ran 3:40.51 for second place.

Jamestown’s Javiana Matos finished third in both the shot put at 29-6 and the weight throw with a distance of 36-6.5. In both events, Salamanca senior Aubrey Domres took fourth at 29-4.25 in shot put and 29-8.25 for weight throw, while Grand Island’s Brooke Christensen won both events.

Along with Lumia’s second-place finish, he also took fifth in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.70. Also for Jamestown, Ryah Leeper was fifth in high jump at 4-4 and Jorge Rivera Jr. was fifth in pole vault at 9-9.

Dunkirk/Forestville/Silver Creek’s day was highlighted by Hanan Mohamad Narvaez running to third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:02.00, while Leah Mays took fourth in the 1,500 at 5:18.79 and Emily Bain took fifth in the 600 meters with 1:54.16.

Two Dunkirk/Forestville/Silver Creek boys earned fifth-place finishes with Riley Smith Mallon at 40-0 in the shot put and Ben Bock in the 1,000 at 2:51.99.

The Dunkirk/Forestville/Silver Creek girls 3,200-relay team of Mays, Mohamad Narvaez, Danielle Felt and Emma Golembieski took third at 11:41.71.

Salamanca’s performance was highlighted by a second-place finish from Isabella Milks in the long jump at 14-6.5, finishing behind Iroquois’ Kaleigha Kosek at 5-2. Milks also took fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 33-9.75.

Jamila Nelthrople took third in the 300 meters at 44.50, while Evan Spruce matched that finish in shot put with 40-9.5.
