Eagles take second to Corry at Morales Memorial
FALCONER — Inviting wrestling teams from Pennsylvania to local tournaments can be a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, local grapplers see competition they don’t normally see throughout the year.
On the other hand, those Pennsylvania wrestlers can be pretty good and take away titles.
Corry (Pa.) claimed five championships, including the top two individual awards, on its way to 308.5 points and the overall team title at the 24th annual Patrick J. Morales Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Falconer High School.
The Beavers’ Mason Savitz was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after beating Central Clarion’s Mason Gourley 4-2 in the 170-pound final. Corry’s Carson Braswell earned the Aggregate Pin Award after totaling five takedowns in 6 minutes, 51 seconds. Steve Willis (124 pounds), Lemech Alberts (160 pounds) and Kael Albers (215 pounds) also won titles for the Beavers.
Locally, Randolph’s Kamren Anderson, Southwestern’s Miles Torres and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Mason Maring were champions, while Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Chase Shirley, Jamestown’s Zachary Little, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman, Jamestown’s Tyler Zwald, Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Nate Warrior and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Walter Lukasiak finished in second place.
Anderson won the 101-pound championship with an 11-6 decision over Shirley in the final. The Cardinals junior led 5-4 after the first period and 9-6 after the second period before a 2-point reversal in the third period sealed the match.
Torres beat Little 7-2 in the 108-pound final. The Trojans sophomore earned a 3-point takedown in the first period and led 4-1 after the second period before another takedown in the third.
Maring, an Eagles senior, beat his sophomore teammate in the 285-pound final. After an early takedown, Maring earned a pin in just a minute and 25 seconds.
Newman lost the 124-pound final to Willis via en 8-0 major decision. Willis led 3-0 after two periods before a reversal and near-fall in the third period.
Zwald was pinned by Braswell a minute and 33 seconds into their 131-pound final to lock up the pin award for the Corry sophomore.
Warrior was pinned by Central Clarion’s Logan Powell just a minute and 13 seconds into the 138-pound final.
Maring, Shirley and Lukasiak led Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer to a second-place team finish with 226.5 points, while Newman’s runnerup showing helped host Falconer/Cassadaga Valley to third place with 142.5 points. Central Clarion (Pa.) was fourth with 133 points and Jamestown was fifth with 126.5 points.
