Chautauqua Lake girls win Lockport invite, Fredonia fourth

LOCKPORT — Chautauqua Lake won the Lockport Invitational girls wrestling tournament last weekend with 186 points, led by weight-class winners Noli Paddock and Lilly Hyde.

Paddock, wrestling at 132 pounds, earned a 12-2 technical fall of Sweet Home’s Sofia Guadagna in the championship bout. Hyde, wrestling at 152 pounds, pinned Fredonia’s Avary LeGrano 56 seconds into their championship bout.

Chautauqua Lake’s Kassidy Benedetto took second at 94 pounds, falling to Alexander’s Anabelle Wessel in the final.

Chautauqua Lake’s Kortlyn Fairbank was third at 100 pounds, beating Niagara Wheatfield’s Sumaya Syed with a pin in 1:58 in the third-place match. Gabriella Testa was also third for the Eagles, earning a 10-0 technical fall over Dunkirk’s Kami McWillson in the 145-pound third-place match. Another third-place finisher for Chautauqua Lake was Chloe Hosier, who earned a pin in 2:18 over Fredonia’s Bryleigh Wicks at 165 pounds. Meghan Pauley was third at 185 pounds for the Eagles, pinning Ken-Ton’s Mackenzie Vetter in 1:34.

Zoey Kling took fourth place for Chautauqua Lake, falling to Lake Shore’s Alexiya Thuman 57 seconds into the 138-pound third-place match.

In placing fourth in a field of 26, the Fredonia girls produced four finalists, with two coming away with titles.

For Fredonia, Leah Waite returned to tournament action with a first-place finish at 107 pounds. Waite, a junior, scored three first-period pins en route to her finals match against Gowanda’s Raelyn Diebel, who fell to Waite in 2:24.

Fredonia crowned another champion at 185 pounds as junior Kim Bauer continued her tournament-winning ways by downing Ryann Berner of Clarence in 37 seconds. Bauer picked up two pins and a technical fall on her way to the finals.

Placing second for Fredonia, in addition to LeGrano, was Mckella Hodkin at 138 pounds. Hodkin, an eighth-grader, dropped a hard-fought battle to Emma Ponzi from Niagara Wheatfield. Wicks was the Hillbillies’ lone fourth-place finisher.

Dunkirk was seventh with 81 points.

Damarielys Cruz was second for the Marauders, falling in 48 seconds to Lockport’s Gabriella Gelnett at 100 pounds. Jaslieen Salgado also took second for Dunkirk, getting pinned in 40 seconds by Lockport’s Khamya Maxwell at 235 pounds.

Gowanda’s Kiernan Quinn was the only other local place finisher, taking fourth at 152 pounds. Quinn was pinned in 42 seconds by Iroquois’ Chaela Brondou.
