Dunkirk/Fredonia Steelers string together league wins

The Dunkirk/Fredonia Steelers Varsity hockey team added two more wins recently in its WNYHSCHL league play by beating Bishop Timon and Team Rochester.

The Steelers topped visiting Bishop Timon, 6-1, on Jan. 9 at Steele Hall. By scoring early and often, Dunkirk/Fredonia opened the game with a 4-1 edge over the Tigers. Max Hazelton sparked the offense as he totaled a four-point night. With goals by Caleb Kimmerly (assisted by Ayden Wronski), Ryan Wegrznowski (assisted by Marcus Crane and Hazelton), Amato Fadale (assisted by Hazelton), and Hazelton (assisted by Wronski), the Steelers took control of the game in the opening period. In the second, Hazelton (assisted by Crane) again found the back of the net to put the Steelers up 5-1. Brayden Bugaj (assisted by Wegrzynowski) scored the final goal of the night in the third period, giving Dunkirk/Fredonia the 6-1 victory.

Winning goalie, Braiden Truby, turned away 12 of the 13 shots he faced. Offensively, the Steelers amassed 63 shots.

On Jan. 11, the Steelers hit the road when they visited Team Rochester in another league tilt. Dunkirk/Fredonia made the trip worthwhile by coming home with an 8-1 win.

Brady Crawford led the way in the scoring column as he recorded his first hat trick of the season. Crawford (unassisted) netted his opening-period goal just two minutes into the game, followed shortly after by Emmett Williams (unassisted), and Ayden Wronski (assisted by Caleb Kimmerly and Jack Frame), giving the Steelers a 3-0 lead to start the game. Amato Fadale (assisted by Landon Trippi and Max Hazelton) added a goal in the second. Dunkirk/Fredonia finished the game off in strong fashion by adding four goals in the final period. Crawford (assisted by Wronski), Blake Waterman (assisted by Wronski), Crawford (assisted by Kimmerly), and Ryan Wegrzynowski (assisted by Bugaj).

Lucas Davidson saved 20 of the 21 total shots he faced for the win in net.

The Dunkirk/Fredonia Steelers currently stand at 4-2-1 overall in the WNYHSCHL White Division. The Steelers next game is Thursday when they host ELPS at 6:30 p.m. in Steele Hall.
