JAMESTOWN — Before he makes up his lineup each swim meet, Frewsburg/Falconer/Jamestown/Southwestern head coach Bruce Johnson pulls Conner Dean aside and asks a question: “I’ll say, ‘Conner, what do you want to swim tonight?'”

The Jamestown senior has earned that right.

Because in a world of specialization, he defies it because he possesses the versatility at the highest levels, and he put that on full display Tuesday evening.

Competing in his final dual meet at his home pool, Dean set individual pool records in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, and was a member of the pool record-setting 200-yard medley relay, highlighting the Bears’ 124-46 victory over Dunkirk/Forestville/Fredonia in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association action.

Dean’s times were 1 minute, 45.16 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle; 4:46.97 in the 500-yard freestyle; and 1:39.07 in the 200-yard medley relay where he teamed up with Landon Frederes, Miles Moore and Daniel Peterson.

“At this meet, he looked at the record board and what (records) he had the best chance to break,” Johnson said. “He could do it in almost anything. He chose the 200 and 500 (freestyles) and I made up the rest of the lineup after that.”

Bound for New York University in the fall, Dean grew up watching his older brother, Kyle — an outstanding swimmer in his own right — which allowed him to “always have something to chase.”

“Sometimes you get it, and get faster,” Dean said.

That’s certainly been the case during his decorated career, which was highlighted a year ago when he joined teammates Aidan McCleery (since graduated) and now-juniors Grady and Miles Moore to win the 200-yard freestyle relay at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships in a state-record time of 1:24.05.

“Relays are always fun to swim,” Dean said. “We’re all tight. … It’s always easy to swim with other people, motivate each other, try to beat each other, beat other people together and set goals together.”

Speaking of setting goals, Dean is a state qualifier in every event, except diving.

“It’s incredible,” Johnson said. “That’s why I keep telling him that he really ought to swim the individual medley at the state meet, because he’s so good at all four strokes. We’ll see. That will be his choice.”

In other highlights from last night, the Bears’ Logan Johnson joined Dean as a double individual winner, capturing the 50-yard freestyle (25.10) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.17).

Trenton Krenzer was a double winner for Dunkirk/Forestville/Fredonia, claiming the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.51) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.40).
