5 local girls teams reach top 25 of ‘C’ state rankings

Five local girls teams have worked themselves into the top 25 of the New York State Sportswriters Association’s Class C rankings this week.

No. 3 Frewsburg and No. 6 Randolph have retained their spots and No. 19 Cassadaga Valley has moved down six spots, while No. 22 Ellicottville has moved up five spots and No. 24 Maple Grove has moved up six spots.

The Bears remained No. 3 after losing to Class AAA No. 22 Lancaster last Friday. Frewsburg travels to Class A Williamsville South to close its regular season today.

The Cardinals remained No. 6 after beating Gowanda and Cassadaga Valley while also losing to Class AA No. 20 Nichols last week. On Tuesday, Randolph closed its regular season with a loss to Class AA No. 12 St. Mary’s.

The Cougars fell to No. 19 with a loss to Randolph, coupled with wins over Clymer and Panama last week. Cassadaga Valley beat Maple Grove on Tuesday of this week and hosts Panama to close its regular season tonight.

The Eagles moved up to No. 22 with losses to Salamanca and Pine Valley coupled with a win over Portville last week. Ellicottville hosts Salamanca to close its regular season tonight.

The Red Dragons moved to No. 24 with a win over Silver Creek last week. Maple Grove lost to Cassadaga Valley on Tuesday of this week and hosts Falconer to close its regular season today.

In Class D, Sherman remained No. 4, Pine Valley moved up a spot to No. 10 and Panama dropped four spots to No. 25.

The Wildcats beat Brocton and Southwestern last week.

The Panthers improved from No. 11 after beating West Valley twice along with Brocton and Dunkirk last week. Pine Valley clinched at least a share of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 4 crown with a win over Ellicottville on Tuesday to wrap up its regular season.

Panama dropped from No. 21 after beating Clymer and Fredonia last week, but also losing to Cassadaga Valley. The Panthers topped Chautauqua Lake on Monday and will close their regular season at Cassadaga Valley tonight.

Southwestern moved down to No. 14 and Salamanca moved up to No. 21 in Class B.

The Trojans dropped four spots after beating Fredonia and losing to Sherman last week. They closed their regular season with a win over Westfield on Wednesday.

The Warriors improved five spots with wins over Allegany-Limestone and Ellicottville last week. Salamanca also beat Franklinville on Tuesday of this week and closes its regular season at Ellicottville tonight.

Other Western New York teams in the girls rankings include: No. 14 Starpoint, No. 22 Kenmore West and No. 26 North Tonawanda in Class AA; No. 29 Iroquois in Class A; and No. 25 Newfane in Class B.

Top-ranked teams in the state include: Christ the King of the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association in Class AAA, Walter Panas of Section I in Class AA, Dalton of the Association of Independent Schools in Class A, Cold Spring Harbor of Section VIII in Class B, Greenwich of Section II in Class C and Elba of Section V in Class D.

BOYS

Two local schools made jumps of four spots in this week’s boys rankings.

Jamestown improved to No. 19 in Class AA after beating Frontier and Rush-Henrietta last week. The Red & Green lost to Class AA No. 9 Bishop Timon-St. Jude on Monday of this week, but beat Clarence to close their regular season Wednesday.

In Class B, Fredonia moved up to No. 19 after losing to Southwestern and beating Allegany-Limestone last week. The Hillbillies beat Southwestern on Tuesday of this week to close their regular season.

Salamanca moved down three spots to No. 5 in Class B after losing to Falconer and beating Cleveland Hill last week. The Warriors then lost to Dunkirk on Tuesday of this week and close their regular season at Frontier tonight.

Falconer remained honorable mention in Class B by beating Salamanca and losing to Panama last week to close its regular season.

In Class C, Westfield moved up to No. 4 and Randolph moved up to No. 5, while Chautauqua Lake remained honorable mention and Gowanda moved back into the honorable mentions.

The Wolverines jumped two spots with a win over Brocton last week. They also beat Sherman on Monday of this week to close their regular season.

The Cardinals jumped two spots with wins over Gowanda and Hamburg last week. They will close their regular season at Class B No. 20 Allegany-Limestone tonight.

The Eagles remained honorable mention after beating Pine Valley last week. They will close their regular season at Southwestern this afternoon.

The Panthers moved back into honorable-mention territory despite losing to Randolph last week to close their regular season.

In Class D, Panama remained No. 1 with wins over Sherman, Falconer and Frewsburg last week. The Panthers beat Class A honorable-mention Cheektowaga on Tuesday of this week to close their regular season.

Forestville remained an honorable mention with a win over Cassadaga Valley last week. The Hornets, who lost to Ellicottville and Class C honorable mention Franklinville this week, finish their regular season at home against Portville today.

Sherman remained honorable mention despite a loss to Panama last week. The Wildcats also lost to Westfield this week and will close their regular season at Pine Valley today.

Other Western New York teams in the rankings include: No. 18 Niagara Falls in Class AAA; No. 2 St. Joe’s, No. 5 Canisius, No. 20 Health Sciences, No. 22 Lockport, and honorable mentions McKinley and Orchard Park in Class AA; No. 13 Grand Island, No. 15 Williamsville South, No. 16 Amherst and honorable mention Olean in Class A; and No. 6 Akron and honorable mention Olmsted in Class B.

Top-ranked teams in the state are: Thomas Jefferson of the Public Schools Athletic League in Class AAA, Albany Academy of the Association of Independent Schools in Class AA, Glens Falls of Section II in Class A, Marcellus of Section III in Class B and Berne-Knox-Westerlo of Section II in Class C.
