Cassadaga Valley girls jump a spot in rankings

The Frewsburg girls evened the season series with Randolph this past week, but the Cardinals still remain one spot ahead of the Bears in the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C rankings at No. 3.

Randolph has a chance to reaffirm that position as it continues its difficult nonleague schedule when the No. 21 team in Class AAA, Cardinal O’Hara (13-7), visits on Saturday. That’s not the only tough game for Randolph down the stretch with a rescheduled game against Class C’s No. 13 team Cassadaga Valley looming and another pair of contests with Class AA-ranked teams No. 30 Nichols and No. 10 Saint Mary’s of Lancaster before the end of the regular season.

Frewsburg added a 65-26 win against Portville on Thursday evening and down the stretch will play nonleague games against Class AAA-ranked No. 23 Lancaster and Class A-ranked No. 27 Williamsville South.

The Cougars will look forward to the rescheduled date against Randolph before finishing the regular season with games against Clymer and Panama.

Maple Grove dropped a low-scoring contest against Westfield and has fallen out of the Class C rankings.

At the top of Class C, Section II’s Greenwich remains undefeated at No. 1 and Section V’s Keshequa retains the No. 2 spot.

The top four of Class D also remained the same with Section V’s Elba (14-0) at No. 1, Section II’s Northville (14-1) at No. 2, Section III’s LaFargeville (13-2) at No. 3 and Sherman (17-1) stakes its place for Section VI at No. 4. The Wildcats just locked up a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 title and will finish regular season play next week with games against Brocton and Southwestern.

Pine Valley (11-4) also remains at No. 12 and added another 52-41 victory against Forestville on Thursday night as it continues to chase Ellicottville down the stretch for a share of the Division 4 title.

Southwestern (15-2) also recently wrapped up a Division 1 title and the Trojans have moved back up the Class B rankings from No. 17 to 13 with four league victories over the course of the week against Dunkirk, Olean, Salamanca and Allegany-Limestone. The Trojans have a chance to finish with a perfect league record on Monday at Fredonia and then play a rematch against Sherman, which gave them their last loss.

Salamanca (10-6) — prior to Thursday’s win over Dunkirk — moved up one spot to No. 23, while Akron (10-4) returned to the rankings sharing No. 30 with General Brown (13-3) from Section III. At the top of Class B, Section III’s Bishop Grimes (15-2) still remains the leader.

Class AAA is still led by Christ the King (16-5) of the Catholic High School Athletic Association; Class AA is topped by Section V’s Hilton (14-0) while Section VI’s Starpoint (10-6) is No. 16, West Seneca West (12-3) is No. 25, Kenmore West (12-3) is No. 28 and North Tonawanda (12-2) is No. 29; and Dalton (17-0) of the Associated Independent Schools leads Class A with Iroquois (12-3) at No. 29.

Starting at $2.99/week.
