Dunkirk falls to Lancers

YOUNGSTOWN — No. 6 Lewiston-Porter shot 6 of 12 from 3-point range during a 22-12 second quarter and held off No. 11 Dunkirk late for a 71-62 Section VI Class A2 prequarterfinal victory Wednesday evening.

The Lancers led 12-10 after the first quarter and freshman Devan Barnwell’s 3-pointer with 5:41 remaining in the first half gave them a 17-14 lead.

They would never trail again.

Lewiston-Porter made five straight 3-pointers — two apiece from juniors Greydan Barnwell and Carmelo Raimondi, and another from Devan Barnwell — late in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead into halftime.

The Marauders played a strong third quarter, turning the ball over just twice, but again the Lancers went 8 for 11 from the field, including 3-pointers from Devan Barnwell and freshman Michael Wylke, to maintain their 12-point lead entering the final eight minutes.

Lewiston-Porter’s lead ballooned to as many as 16 early in the fourth quarter before Dunkirk began to chip away.

Junior Malik McCall’s 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining pulled the Marauders to within 10. That started a string of nine straight Dunkirk points from McCall to eventually make it a 63-57 game with 1:07 remaining.

But the Marauders were forced to foul and Greydan Barnwell went 8 for 8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory for the Lancers.

Sophomore K’Vion Tell led Dunkirk with 19 points, McCall had 16 and senior Greg Orcutt had 14.

Greydan Barnwell led the Lancers with 29 points, while Devan Barnwell and Wylke each had 12. Raimondi finished with 10.

Lewiston-Porter finished 24 of 50 from the field, including 11 of 26 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 12 times.

Dunkirk was 22 of 63 from the field, inflated by a 8 of 25 fourth quarter. The Marauders were just 2 of 16 from 3-point range — 1 of 12 in the final eight minutes — and turned the ball over 11 times in the game.

Dunkirk, which finished 8-13 on the season, loses Orcutt, Davon Strong, Logan Denson, Juan Paz, Elitdael Morales and Aries Cheverez to graduation.

Lewiston-Porter will travel to No. 3 Olean for a Friday quarterfinal.
