Fishing jigs and flies for kids at expo

Submitted Photo Young Andrew Frelock has become an ardent and effective WNY steelhead angler who will share his fishing secrets and lure-making crafts at the Greater Niagara Expo this weekend.

Now and then, a young fishing superstar emerges among us to share his passion for fishing with others. Everyone, regardless of age or skill level, can meet this young man this weekend at the Greater Niagara Fishing Expo. His name is Andrew Frelock. He is a very knowledgeable WNY fisherman who will be sharing time with the Western New York Steelheaders — look for their booth. This charismatic young man is 18 years old and in his first year at Erie Community College.

“I love fishing with a passion,” Frelock said. “I live and breathe it every moment, and the good Lord has blessed me with this amazing love.”

He started fishing when he was about 8 years old, but he confesses that he was never a grand fisherman; rather, like many of us, he began to evolve over time.

“It has been an amazing journey to learn and further achieve each day,” Frelock said. “I began tying jigs and creating my own lures just four years ago. Over those four years, I have become better versed, more educated, and eager to improve fishing crafts. I have learned from many other wonderful people along the way. They, along with time on the streams and lakes, have allowed me to learn more and adapt faster.”

He shares a thought for youngsters of all ages in this manner.

“Adventure is out there; it is up to you whether you want it or not. In these adventures, do cherish every moment. The moments are only out of your creation,” Frelock said. “I would also like to mention that please take care of all the natural resources we love so dearly. Some things as simple as taking a single garbage bag with you and filing it can go so far in protecting our natural resources. It takes the effort of many, not few.”

Frelock adds that Sunday at the Expo is Kids Day, and he has some great things planned. Kids can choose two packs of soft beads and a pack of hard beads (highly effective steelhead baits). They can then ask Andrew to tie them a jig where they can choose everything about the jig: color, size, etc. The kids will be able to learn how the jig is created and more. It will be inspirational for the kids. Andrew’s seminars will be in Room 14 at 1:30 p.m. today, 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

This expo has placed emphasis on fishing education; this year, more than 250 seminars will be offered that are free with a paid entry ticket. A single-day expo pass is $11, and a multi-day pass good for all four days is $25. Veterans, active military, career and volunteer firefighters, police and EMTs receive a $5 discount. Show hours vary as follows: today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. With the pass, you’ll have access to a wealth of knowledge and fun activities. Gotta love the outdoors.
