Frewsburg, Randolph girls could meet in semis

OBSERVER File Photo Cassadaga Valley’s Emiley Anderson and the rest of the Cougars are the No. 6 seed in Class C.

While a third meeting between Frewsburg and Randolph would likely be the best matchup for local girls basketball fans, that hypothetical won’t happen in a sectional final.

What most already knew became official Saturday as Section VI released its playoff brackets: should the Bears and Cardinals advance, they will meet in a semifinal.

No. 2 Randolph — the New York State Sportswriters Association’s sixth-ranked Class C team — and No. 3 Frewsburg — the state’s third-ranked team — are on a collision course for a Wednesday, March 5 semifinal at Jamestown Community College.

Class C playoffs will open Wednesday with prequarterfinals. No. 9 Silver Creek will travel to No. 8 Franklinville, No. 4 Ellicottville — No. 22 in the state — will host No. 13 Barker, No. 5 Maple Grove — No. 24 in the state — will host No. 12 Gowanda, No. 10 Cattaraugus-Little Valley will travel to No. 7 Westfield and No. 6 Cassadaga Valley — No. 19 in the state — will host No. 11 Chautauqua Lake.

Those prequarterfinals will set up Friday’s quarterfinals. The Silver Creek/Franklinville winner will go to No. 1 Holland, Randolph will host the Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Westfield winner, Frewsburg will host the Chautauqua Lake/Cassadaga Valley winner and the Gowanda/Maple Grove winner will take on the Barker/Ellicottville winner at the higher seed.

Next Wednesday’s semifinals at Jamestown CC will be at 5 and 6:30 p.m. with Saturday’s final at 2 p.m. back at Jamestown CC.

Sherman — No. 4 in the state — is the No. 1 seed in Class D and has already advanced to the 5:30 p.m. semifinal Thursday, March 6 at Jamestown CC. No. 2 Pine Valley — No. 10 in the state — is in the same boat, waiting in the 7 p.m. semifinal that same night.

In Friday quarterfinals, No. 5 Clymer will visit No. 4 Forestville and No. 6 North Collins will travel to No. 3 Panama — the state’s 25th-ranked team.

The Class D final is set for noon Saturday, March 8 at Jamestown CC.

In Class B1, Southwestern — the state’s 14th-ranked team — is the top seed and awaits a Saturday quarterfinal opponent Saturday.

No. 9 Tonawanda and No. 8 Medina will play for that spot Wednesday.

In another Class B1 quarterfinal Saturday, No. 7 Fredonia will take on No. 2 Health Sciences at Villa Maria College.

Class B1 semifinals are set for Wednesday, March 5 at Maryvale High School, while the final is Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at Buffalo State University.

In Class B2, Salamanca — the state’s No. 21 team — is the No. 2 seed and will host a quarterfinal Saturday.

No. 10 Falconer will travel to No. 7 Royalton-Hartland for a prequarterfinal Wednesday. The winner of that game will travel to Salamanca on Saturday.

The Class B2 semifinals are Tuesday, March 4 at Maryvale High School, while the final is Sunday, March 9 at Buffalo State University.

The only other local team participating in the postseason is No. 3 Jamestown, which will take on No. 2 Niagara Falls in a Class AAA semifinal Tuesday, March 4 at 8 p.m. at Maryvale High School.

The winner of that game will take on No. 1 Lancaster in the sectional final Sunday, March 9 at 7:15 p.m. at Buffalo State University.

Starting at $2.99/week.
