Local athletes reach podium at Section VI indoor track & field championships

HOUGHTON — The Holland/East Aurora boys and girls indoor track and field teams had quite the day at the Kerr-Pegula Field House at Houghton University winning the boys and girls small school Section VI championships on Saturday.

Locally, the Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg Randolph boys finished third among the medium schools with a score of 83, while Sweet Home won at 120. The girls from Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg Randolph also finished top five at No. 5 with 59 points and Hamburg won with 120 for medium schools.

The highest small school girls team was Fredonia/Westfield finishing 7th with 26.5 points.

Then among large schools the Jamestown girls finished 6th with 51 points and Williamsville North won with 180, while Jamestown boys took 9th with 41 and Lancaster won with 124.5.

The Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg Randolph boys finished atop the podium four times and took second once, while the girls had one win and top five several times.

For the boys, Ethan Verbosky won the 1,000 meters with a time of 4:44.29, Charles Sundquist won the weight throw with a distance of 54-3.75, the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams won. Verbosky also took second in the 1,000 with a time of 2:47.86 and Owen Erlandson finished third with 2:48.86. Then Cody Kent was third in the 3,200 with a time of 10:11.34 and Anthony Wood finished 5th in the shot put with a distance of 38 feet and 2.5 inches.

For the girls, Grace Lennon shined with a first place finish in the 55 dash with a time of 7.66 and then she took third in the 300 with a time of 43.55. Sopheia Nelson-Bennett took second in the 1,500 race walk at 8:46.89 and teammate Ava Krofka was 5th at 10:24.32, Oliva Hallenbeck was 4th in the 55 hurdles with 9.60, Mary Lundmark was 4th in pole vault at 8-9, Evalyn Fessel placed 5th in the 1,000 at 3:37.66 and the 800 relay finished 3rd at 1:56.17 while the 3,200 relay was 5th at 11:43.25.

The Fredonia/Westfield girls had top five finishes from Jordan Morris taking 2nd in weight throw with a distance of 33-1.75, Callie Draggett was 3rd in shot put at 31-5, Elizabeth Saunders took 3rd in high jump at 4-6 and Mariella Russo reached the same height but took 4th.

The Dunkirk/Forestville/Silver Creek boys reached the top of the podium in medium schools with Johnee Thomas winning the 600 at 1:26.12, Riley Smith Mallon placed 2nd in shot put at 44-11 and the 800 relay was 5th at 1:39.84. The girls took 2nd in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:27.33, Leah Mays finished 3rd in the 1,500 with 5:15.16 and Emily Bain was 4th in the 600 at 1:47.23.

The Jamestown girls neared the top of the podium in large schools with Emily Cardinale taking 2nd in pole vault at 10-0, Javiana Matos took 3rd in weight throw at 39-5.5, London Hamilton was 3rd in the 3,000 at 11:30.60, Belle Johnson was 3rd in 600 at 1:46.41, Cardinale was also 5th in the 55 hurdles at 9.69 and the 3,200 relay took 3rd at 10:56.54.

The Red & Green boys had Jorge Rivera Jr. take 2nd in the high jump at 5-10, Jarren Cotter was 3rd in the 300 at 37.25 and teammate Cameron Burgess was 5th at 38.10, Brighton Lumia was 3rd in the 55 hurdles at 8.43, the 800 relay took 3rd in 1:36.55 and the 3,200 relay was 5th in 9:43.08.

The Salamanca girls had some strong performances in small school with Isabella Milks taking 2nd in high jump at 4-10 and she also took 5th in triple jump at 32-3.5. The 1,600 relay team also placed 5th at 4:48.03.

The Salamanca boys had Evan Spruce place 4th in the shot put at 35-9.
