Westfield boys hop Randolph in rankings, but both fall

It appears playing high-level nonleague competition has become detrimental to local teams’ statewide recognition.

Three area teams dropped in the New York State Sportswriters Association’s boys basketball rankings after tough nonleague losses a week ago.

Jamestown (12-2), which was ranked No. 19 in Class AAA, dropped to No. 26 after beating Williamsville North and Lancaster, but losing to host St. Joe’s in the Centercourt Classic on Saturday. The Red & Green will travel to Lancaster tonight and host Park on Saturday at McElrath Gymnasium.

Randolph (14-2) and Westfield (15-2) dropped from the top two spots in Class C. The Cardinals fell from No. 1 to No. 7 after beating Portville and Silver Creek, but losing to Westfield in the Centercourt Classic. Randolph beat Frewsburg on Tuesday night and will host Cassadaga Valley on Friday. The Wolverines fell from No. 2 to No. 6 after losing to Panama and beating Randolph. Westfield beat Maple Grove on Tuesday and will visit Chautauqua Lake on Friday.

Also in Class C, Chautauqua Lake (10-7), Franklinville (13-4) and Gowanda (11-7) received honorable mention. The Eagles beat Sherman and Clymer last week before topping Brocton on Tuesday night. They will host Westfield on Friday. Franklinville beat Forestville, Pine Valley and West Valley last week before topping Ellicottville on Tuesday and losing to Fillmore on Wednesday night. Franklinville will host North Collins on Friday. Gowanda beat Cassadaga Valley and Cattaraugus-Little Valley before losing to Frewsburg last week. On Tuesday, Gowanda beat Portville and on Wednesday it lost to Panama. Gowanda will travel to Silver Creek on Friday.

In Class D, Panama (13-2) is still No. 2 after beating Maple Grove and Westfield last week. The Panthers, who topped Brocton on Tuesday and Gowanda on Wednesday, will visit Clymer on Friday.

Clymer (7-9) and Forestville (11-4) received honorable mention in Class D. The Pirates beat Brocton, but then lost to Chautauqua Lake and Southwestern last week. They also lost to Sherman on Tuesday and will host Panama on Friday. The Hornets lost to Franklinville and Sherman, but beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley last week. They beat West Valley on Wednesday and will host Pine Valley on Friday.

In Class B, Salamanca (14-1) remained No. 3, Allegany-Limestone (10-4) dropped to No. 15 and Fredonia (8-8) moved up to No. 22, while Falconer (8-10) remained an honorable-mention selection. The Warriors beat Olean, Fredonia and East Aurora last week before topping Depew on Monday night. They will visit Allegany-Limestone on Friday. The Gators lost to Southwestern and beat Dunkirk last week before beating Falconer on Tuesday. They will host Salamanca on Friday. The Hillbillies beat Lake Shore and lost to Salamanca last week before losing to Olean on Tuesday. They will visit Dunkirk on Friday. The Golden Falcons lost to Dunkirk and Olean last week before losing to Allegany-Limestone on Tuesday. They are off until next Tuesday at Salamanca.

Other Western New York teams in the rankings include: No. 21 Niagara Falls in Class AAA; No. 2 St. Joe’s, No. 4 Timon-St. Jude, No. 5 Canisius, No. 20 Lockport, No. 22 McKinley, and honorable mentions Health Sciences, Orchard Park and Williamsville East in Class AA; No. 14 Williamsville South, No. 22 Amherst, No. 23 Grand Island, and honorable mentions Cheektowaga, Iroquois and Olean in Class A; and No. 8 Akron, and Eden, MST Seneca, Olmsted, and Wilson in Class B.

Top-ranked teams in the state are: Archbishop Stepinac of the Catholic High Schools in Class AAA, Albany Academy of the Association of Independent Schools in Class AA, Glens Falls of Section II in Class A, World of Inquiry of Section V in Class B, Berne-Knox-Westerlo of Section II in Class C and Fillmore of Section V in Class D.
