Dunkirk’s Thomas wins 600m at sectionals
HOUGHTON — Jamestown senior Jarren Cotter earned a pair of sectional patches at the Section VI Indoor Track and Field state qualifier on Saturday and one of those earned him a trip to the state championships this weekend.
Cotter finished just ahead of a trio of runners in the 300 meters with a first-place time of 36.00 to claim the sectional title and a spot on Staten Island at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in the state championships. Joining Cotter at states is Frontier senior Felix Melendez running a time of 36.05, while Orchard Park’s Steven Barlette and Tapestry’s Ayden Henderson ran 36.21 and 36.83, respectively.
Cotter also helped the Red & Green finish third in the 800 relay with Cameron Burgess, Angel Martinez and Brighton Lumia running to a time of 1:35.03, while Sweet Home heads to states with a time of 1:31.23 and Orchard Park took second at 1:33.28.
Joining Cotter at states with a sectional championship is Dunkirk senior Johnee Thomas, who won the 600 at 1:23.70 as Frontier’s Kenneth Wolcott was second at 1:24.34.
Then in the field, Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph senior Charles Sundquist won the sectional title in the weight throw at a distance of 60 feet and 8.5 inches. He will be joined at states by Lancaster senior Ayden Cronin with a distance of 60-03.00 in second.
Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph junior Ethan Verbosky will be going to states after taking second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:29.90, beating out Starpoint’s Timothy Lukasik at 4:29.95. The champion was Olmstead sophomore Henry Peterson with a time of 4:27.14.
Jamestown senior Emily Cardinale narrowly booked her spot at states, finishing in second in the pole vault while reaching the same height of 11-00.00 as Starpoint’s Emily Waldron, but in fewer attempts. Orchard Park junior Ally Schmitz won the event after reaching a height of 11-06.00.
Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph senior Cody Kent earned a sectional patch in the 3,200 after he took fourth with a time of 10:11.40. Heading to states in the event are Lancaster junior Carson Zuba with a winning time of 9:24.66 and Clarence senior Ricky Curiel at 9:35.50.
The Falconer/Maple Grove/Frewsburg/Randolph 1,600 relay team of Noah Erickson, Cole Vaughn, Rider Carlson and Verbosky also earned a patch taking fourth with a time of 3:39.27.
