SYRACUSE — Four area bowlers — two girls and two boys — will be competing at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships this weekend at AMF Strike’n Spare Lanes.
The girls who have qualified are junior Addison Cappalino of Jamestown in Division 1; and sophomore Kelsey Fischer of Frewsburg in Division 2. For the boys, the qualifiers are senior Anthony Pratt of Southwestern and junior Ryan Kelly of Fredonia, both in Division 2.
Following is a recap of how each bowler performed to earn a berth at the state tournament:
GIRLS
— Cappalino, who is coached by Peggy Harris, turned in a memorable performance to finish in first place at the Section VI Class A championships last month at AMF Airport Lanes. In her morning series, she rolled a 243-208-204 and followed that up in the afternoon with a 213-211-204 to finish with a total of 1,283, to beat Kenmore’s Cailyn Willard by 36 pins.
— Coached by Tom Lombardo, Fischer finished sixth individually at the Section VI Division 2 championships after tossing a morning series of 211-220-164 and an afternoon series of 191-179-202. During the regular season, Fischer’s top individual game was a 207 and she averaged 164.8. Fischer’s performance led Frewsburg to the Class D championship with a morning series of 789-861-804 and an afternoon series of 857-821-883 for a total of 5,014 pins.
BOYS
— Pratt, who is coached by Jenna Clauson, finished fourth at the Section VI Division 2 state qualifier, and is the first Southwestern boy to qualify for states since Chris Goodwill in 2007.
