Frewsburg knocks off Stillwater to claim Class C crown

TROY — Frewsburg sophomore Jadyn Trocki is quite familiar with having the ball in her hands during tense moments of the game. In her freshman trip to the state championships, she had the last look for the Bears when a 3-pointer that would have tied the game, but it did not fall.

Working all the way back to the state championships and reaching the final Friday night at the Edward F. McDonough Sports Complex at Hudson Valley Community College, Trocki once again had the pressure on to connect on some big shots.

With Stillwater looking to climb back into the Class C championship in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Frewsburg needed a big bucket to prevent a comeback and this time Trocki delivered. Responding to a basket from Stillwater, Trocki pulled up from the arc with 3:42 left and drilled a shot to extend the Bears’ lead to 55-40 which completely took the energy out of the nearly home crowd for Section II’s Stillwater.

Trocki did it again with just about two minutes left and that 59-42 lead was the final nail in the coffin as Frewsburg held on for the 59-44 victory in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C championship game.

“I missed the game-tying shot last year,” Trocki said.. “So all summer I focused on what I can do to help my team win. I think we did just that.”

It was Jadyn’s 3-pointers that put the game away and secured the first girls basketball state championship for Frewsburg, but it was her older sister, Teghan, who was automatic in the first half to give the Bears the lead it needed to secure the title.

“That was our motivation all season,” Teghan Trocki said about last year. “We knew what it took to get there and we knew what we had to do to make it all the way like we did tonight. I think that’s just what we’ve been working for all season.”

Teghan was perfect in the first half from downtown, going 5 for 5 and leading the Bears to a 30-20 halftime lead with her 15 points.

“I felt good in warmups,” Teghan stated. “Then once that first one went through all my nerves kind of left and I just let it fly from there.”

Just like their semifinal matchup, the Bears jumped out to an 8-0 lead and Stillwater felt the pressure to play catch up. Frewsburg went 5 of 6 in the first half from 3-point range and when Stillwater attempted to match that it went 1 for 9 with the only shot connecting at the end of the half by Addison Thornton to make it a 10-point game.

“We did a lot of research,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said about Stillwater. “About shooting percentage, where they like to shoot from, who shoots from what parts of the floor. We kind of just narrowed in on a few players that we felt didn’t shoot the ball from the outside very much, because we knew that they were going to give us trouble inside. So we had two floating defenders that were never leaving the paint so we were able to jam it up inside and get rebounds because they get a lot of offensive rebounds.”

Frewsburg came into the final with the best game plan to make its opponent uncomfortable, but halftime adjustments from Stillwater made it so the game was never out of reach even with the Bears leading the entire contest.

After trying to mimic Frewsburg, Stillwater went to its strength of attacking the basket with its length and that resulted in the deficit hovering right around 10 points. On top of that, Stillwater’s defense took away the three for a majority of the second half and forced the Bears to attack the basket.

“I think that’s just what makes us so good,” Teghan Trocki said about her team. “You take one thing away and it just opens up another thing for someone else. You can’t just stop one thing.”

Unfortunately for Stillwater, Frewsburg showed that it can score many different ways, including by Ava Jimerson and Abery Harvey attacking the basket.

“We talk all the time about taking what the defense gives us,” Beaver stated. “In the first half they gave us a shot outside and we were making them. Then I told them at halftime, I said likely they’re going to be focusing on outside shots and making it really difficult to get those off. So we just have to take what the defense gives us. If they give us a lane to drive, take it.”

Jimerson matched Teghan Trocki’s 15 points by the end of the game and Harvey scored 9 of her 11 points in the second half. Facilitating much of the scoring again was Taytum Jimerson with six assists along with her six rebounds and Jadyn Trocki managed four assists on top of her game-high 18 points and three rebounds. Ava Jimerson also had a double-double, collecting 10 boards with her 15 points.

“I think we’re all offensive threats,” Jadyn Trocki added. “Clearly everyone on our team can score and that’s what makes us so dangerous.”

Stillwater picked things up in the middle of the game with Andie Luskin leading the way with 12 points and both Thornton and Miranda Price had 11, but the Cinderella story for the first-time sectional and regional champions was cut short in the state championship.

“It’s a surreal feeling I can’t even put into words,” Beaver said about winning the state championship. “You work hard for it, you plan for it, but just the feeling is, you can’t describe it, it’s pretty awesome.”

Frewsburg finishes its dominant run to the program’s first girls basketball title with a fourth straight win by double digits, taking home the 2025 Class C title 59-44.

“It’s unbelievable,” Jadyn Trocki said. “We’ve been dreaming since the season started and since we started playing basketball.”
