Fredonia rolls Dunkirk 19-3 in D1

DUNKIRK — A day after Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda earned his 400th career victory at Fredonia High School, the Hillbillies beat the Marauders 19-3 at Al Stuhlmiller Field.

Fredonia broke open a scoreless game with a 12-run second inning during which it sent 16 batters to the plate and collected nine hits.

Matt Cowan had a pair of RBI singles in the inning; Ashton Putney and Colin Crowell each had two-run singles; and Colin Luce had a rare three-run single during the frame.

The Hillbillies (1-2, 1-1) added five runs in the fourth inning as Putney and Andrew Cowan each drew bases-loaded walks, Crowell had an RBI groundout and Brady Helmer hit a two-run double.

Fredonia’s final two runs scored on an Andrew Cowan RBI single and a Luca Gullo sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Matt Cowan earned the win with four innings of four-hit ball on the mound. He struck out three and walked four while hitting a batter. Luce struck out one in the final inning.

Paul Trippy had an RBI single, Josh Lemanski drew a bases-loaded walk and a run scored on an error for Dunkirk (5-1, 1-1). Lemanski and Ryan Kinney each doubled while Gabe Valentine added a single.

All told for Fredonia, Matt Cowan had three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs; Helmer had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored; Putney doubled, walked three ties, drove in three runs and scored twice; Andrew Cowan had a single, four walks, two RBIs and two runs scored; and Crowell and Luce each singled and drove in three runs.

GOWANDA TOPS FRANKLINVILLE

GOWANDA — His offense provided just one hit, but that was enough for Carter Capozzi.

The Gowanda right-hander tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and did not walk a batter as the Panthers beat Franklinville 4-1 in Division 3 play.

Franklinville (1-2, 1-1) led 1-0 after the first inning before Gowanda (5-2, 3-0) scored all four of its runs during its half of the second inning. Seth Geiger reached on an error and Drew Kota was hit by a pitch before Brayden Smith walked to load the bases. Madden Lay drew a walk to force in the tying run before Kota scored on a passed ball. Blake Herman then hit an RBI single and the fourth run scored on a fielder’s choice.

The four runs were enough for Capozzi, who faced just one batter over the minimum through his final five innings.

Bretton Blecha had two hits and an RBI while Brady Tatlow doubled for Franklinville.

Matthew Spittler struck out five over five innings of one-hit ball. Just two of the four runs he allowed were earned.

WOLFPACK TAKES DOWN MG

BEMUS POINT — Andrew Spiesman had two hits, including a double, drove in four runs and scored a run as Clymer/Sherman/Panama earned head coach Matt Hair’s first varsity win with a 13-2 five-inning Division 2 victory over Maple Grove.

Isaiah Burkholder had three hits; Gavin Burchanowski singled, drove in two runs and scored twice; and Max White doubled and drove in two runs for the Wolfpack (1-2, 1-1).

Tate Catanese threw all five innings in the win, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking three.

Gavin Darr had a pair of doubles and drove in a run while Jake Reinhardt and Zach Cornell each singled for the Red Dragons (0-3, 0-2).

STENNSTROM WALKS OFF FOR FALCONER

FALCONER — Erik Stenstrom’s eighth-inning two-run double plated the winning runs as Falconer walked off with a 7-6 Division 3 win over Randolph.

Logan Johnson singled and Gavin Curtis hit a two-run double for Falconer in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game.

Allen Root gave the Cardinals (1-2, 0-1) a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI single.

Stenstrom went 3 for 4 and Chase Bianco was 2 for 4 for the Golden Falcons (2-0, 1-0).

Stenstrom gave up three hits and three unearned runs while striking out 10 and walking three on the mound.

Aiden Taylor allowed six hits and one run while striking out four and walking one for Randolph.

Bryson Pitts and Maverick Schmeltz each collected two hits for Randolph.
