Fredonia State track and field begins at Geneseo; Lax falls to Buffalo State

GENESEO — The Fredonia State women’s track team opened its season at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational on April 3.
Strong performances for the Blue Devils were put forth by Brayton Tripi, Allison Bartoszek, Calie Hudson, Cara Pellechia and Skylar French.
Tripi finished eighth of 28 jumpers clearing 1.48m in the high jump.
Bartoszek was 34th/53 in the 100m dash in 13.50s. She was 34th/61 in the 200m in 28.27.
Hudson was 28th of 47 in the 5000m in a time of 20:13.30.

Pellechia was fourth in the pole vault with 3.50m, and French was fourth with 2.90m. Pellechia’s height puts her at the top of the SUNYAC rankings in the early season.
WOMENS LACROSSE FALLS SHORT
FREDONIA — A spirited effort by Fredonia State women’s lacrosse fell short Wednesday evening as Buffalo State stormed back with a dominant second half to claim a 15-9 victory.
Fredonia State to start the game came out firing, scoring the game’s first two goals within seconds of each other. Kiera Young opened the scoring with a free-position goal in the first quarter, followed quickly by Noelle Mendez converting a feed from Sydney Buchko. After Buffalo State’s Lauren Rinow answered, Young struck again to put Fredonia up 3-1. Rinow added another for Buffalo State before the quarter ended.
The Devils extended their lead in the second quarter with goals from Jenna Slamka assisted by Buchko then with Mieley Baran, and Mendez, making it 6-3. Even as Buffalo State fought back, another tally by Slamka in the final minute gave Fredonia a 7-4 halftime advantage. The second half belonged to Buffalo State which was led by senior attacker Vanessa Willick, who scored six goals and tallied two assists in the game. The Bengals overwhelmed Fredonia State with an 11-2 run over the final 30 minutes. Willick added 10 draw controls for the Bengals and picked up three ground balls as well. Buffalo State out shot Fredonia State 26-8 in the second half alone.
Rinow and Kira Grzechowiak added four goals each for Buffalo as well.
Fredonia State’s offense was paced by Buchko, who recorded a team-high four points (one goal, three assists), while both Mendez, Baran, Young and Slamka notched two goals apiece.
In goal, Ashleigh Manns made five saves through three quarters, while Jessica Kowalski added three saves in the final frame.
Buffalo State goalie Brielle Lum went the distance, registering eight saves.
Fredonia State drops to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC. They will look to rebound when they play host to the Potsdam Bears this Saturday for Senior night with the game scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
SUDBRINK IS STUDENT ATHLETE OF YEAR
Senior David Sudbrink was named the Men’s Hockey Student Athlete of the Year by the SUNYAC on Tuesday.
Sudbrink served as a Blue Devil assistant captain and sported a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout his five years at Fredonia State. The graduate student from Nolensville, Tenn. majored in Public Accounting and Finance.
He was also honored with another prestigious award — The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE), the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student by the University, according to SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr.
Sudbrink had four goals and eight assists while playing in 24 of the team’s 25 games this year. For his four-year career, he appeared in 95 of his team’s 97 games and totaled 40 points with 17 goals and 23 assists. What would have been his first year of competition was canceled due to Covid.
The SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award combines academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition. Nominating information includes cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors.
