Santiago leads Brocton offense at Maple Grove
BEMUS POINT — Ray Santiago was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and stole five bases as Brocton beat Maple Grove 14-4 in five innings of Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball play Tuesday.
Anthony Gatto threw four innings of three-hit ball, allowing three runs and four walks while striking out seven for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0).
Nate Laurito doubled and drove in three runs; Drew Gustafson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Gatto scored three runs and stole three bases.
Camden Lombardo and Kyle Yohe combined for seven strikeouts on the mound for the Red Dragons (0-2, 0-1). Lombardo was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
BIG FIFTH INNING FOR TROJANS
LAKEWOOD — Southwestern broke open a 1-1 game with a six-run fifth inning and beat Olean 9-3 in Division 1 action at Packard Field.
Brody Ellis went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored; George Marshall doubled, scored a run and drove in a run; and Oscar Harris hit a solo home run for the Trojans (1-1, 1-0).
Judd Harris walked to open the fifth inning and Wilson Genareo followed with a single before Marshall’s RBI double. Oscar Harris then walked to load the bases and Genareo scored on a wild pitch. A walk to Gavin Anderson loaded the bases again and Marshall scored on a wild pitch before Ellis hit a two-out, two-run single to left field to make it 6-1. Three more walks forced in Ellis with the sixth run of the inning and a 7-1 lead.
Genareo threw five innings of three-hit ball, allowing an unearned run and three walks while striking out five. Ellis threw the final two no-hit innings with two strikeouts, but did walk five.
Austin Miles, Alex Jones and Grady Smucinski had singles for the Huskies (2-2, 0-1). Miles struck out seven while Noah Cartmill and Taylor Teachman each struck out two on the mound.
SHEESLEY SHINES FOR BEARS
FREWSBURG — Maddox Sheesley threw a five-inning two-hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks as Frewsburg beat Westfield 10-0 in Division 2 play.
Sheesley also went 2 for 2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored, while Chase Haglund, Daniel Peterson and Drake Beckstrom each added a single for the Bears (2-1, 2-0).
Frewsburg went ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning and scored at least a run in all five trips to the plate. The game ended when Sheesley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the 10th run.
Danny Bratton doubled and Tristen Phillips singled for the Wolverines (0-1, 0-1). Trent Ramm and Joel Stein combined for seven strikeouts on the mound.
JAUSS STARS IN RELIEF
MAYVILLE — Greyson Wellman hit a two-run double during a five-run fourth inning as Chautauqua Lake rallied past Pine Valley for an 8-4 Division 2 win.
The Eagles fell behind 4-1 in the second inning when Camryn Slade hit a two-out, bases-clearing triple for the Panthers (0-2, 0-1).
Chautauqua Lake (2-2, 1-0) made it 4-2 in the bottom of the second before its big fourth inning. Devin Hewes tied the game with a two-run single to start the uprising.
Michael Jauss earned the win in relief, striking out 12 and walking three while not allowing a hit after Smith’s triple.
Clayton Smith had two hits including a double, while Nate Henry had three hits, stole two bases and scored a run.
It was the Eagles’ first game since being no-hit by Dunkirk on Friday in Cooperstown.
In that game, six Chautauqua Lake pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
Jauss threw a scoreless first inning and Cayden Blackman threw a scoreless second inning.
The Marauders scored a run in the third off Henry, but the Eagles threw out a runner at the plate.
In the fourth, Clayton Smith got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam with a strikeout, a popout and a flyout to right field on which Jauss made a shoestring catch in the gap.
Dunkirk scored its only other run in the fifth inning, but Hewes limited the damage when Chautauqua Lake got an out on a failed suicide squeeze and also threw a runner out at home plate from center field.
Connor Nowicki threw a scoreless sixth inning and Henry reentered to throw a scoreless seventh.
FRANKLINVILLE TOPS ELLICOTTVILLE
FRANKLINVILLE — Isaac Towne went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a run scored as Franklinville downed Ellicottville 14-4 in Division 3 action.
Matthew Spittler also went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and scored four runs for the Panthers (1-1, 1-0), while Collin Mooney was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Brady Tatlow finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
The Eagles (1-2, 0-1) were led by Ryan Norton with a double and three RBIs, while Sawyer Miller was 2 for 2 with a run scored and Cameron Mendell finished 2 for 4 with a run.
HOLLERAN SHINES AT THE PLATE
SALAMANCA — Cory Holleran went 3 for 4 with a triple, three runs scored and three stolen bases as Salamanca beat Allegany-Limestone 8-4 in Division 1 play at Veterans Memorial Park.
Jake Herrick tripled and drove in two runs and Payton Bradley also tripled while Holleran struck out five on the mound for the Warriors (7-0, 2-0).
