(3:10 p.m.) Names released in break wall boat accident

SUNSET BAY — The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has released more information after a boat hit a break wall in Sunset Bay.
On Monday around 2:25 a.m. sheriff deputies received a report of a boat crash in the area of the break wall. Responding deputies found a 23 foot cuddy cabin boat grounded on top of the break wall with no one around. Multiple agencies were then dispatched and began a search of the area. Sunset Bay Fire Department, Lake Erie Beach Fire Department, Erie County Air One, Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team, and the Chautauqua County Navigation Unit all assisted in the search.
The search was called off just before 6 a.m. when deputies on shore were able to locate Robert J Bengert, 40 of Willowdale Avenue, Blasdell. Bengert was identified as a passenger in the boat at the time of the crash. Investigation found that both Bengert and the operator of the boat later identified as Scott Schieder, 54, of Lawson Road, Cheektowaga, suffered only minor injuries in the crash and left the scene without reporting the crash.
The investigation remains open and charges are pending. Arraignments for the removal of the boat are being made.
